Antibiotics and thrush

I have a GP appointment tomorrow for a cut which I am fairly sure is infected (pharmacist agrees). If I am given antibiotics I will almost certainly get thrush based on previous experience.

Can I ask the doctor for thrush medication pre-emptively? And is there anything I can do to try and reduce the likelihood of getting thrush in the first place?

Thanks!

I always get thrush when I take antibiotics. I just go and buy "canestan once" and take it a couple of days into the course of Antonio's. Is just one tablet. No messing about.

Definitely tell your GP about thrush. There are certain types of antibiotics that are less likely to cause the problem - I get thrush with Amoxycillin but not Penicillin V. And yes, ask for a prescription for thrush medication too just in case.

It is probably cheaper to buy thrush medication OTC than to get a prescription.

Thank you, that's very helpful! Anything to avoid a few days of terrible itching Grin

@LoniceraJaponica I am very lucky to get free prescriptions (live in Scotland) but thank you for the tip!

I second the amoxicillin comment! It's the worst for thrush for me!
