Does D-Mannose work for cystitis?

glitterbiscuits · 16/07/2018 09:45

I'm having yet another bad flare up. Possibly the third this year?
I'm losing track. Antibiotics are not helping this time and I feel like my entire bladder is tingling.
Has anyone tried D Mannose? I can't decided if it's a con or not? As there seems to be quite a pushy few sellers about.

Absolutely not a con!!! I was diagnosed with intistitial cystitis after 2 cystoscopies and have managed to keep my UTIs under control over the last 10 years by using it. Amazing stuff, just wish it was cheaper.

hownowhashbrowns · 16/07/2018 10:15

Ps I buy mine online from Sweet Cures, haven't ever come across any pushy sellers!

glitterbiscuits · 16/07/2018 10:29

Thanks hownow what dose do you take? Can you tell me a bit more please?
I was on long term antibiotics a few years ago and then seemed to be in remission for a long time. I'd get one or two UTIs a year but they are definitely increasing now.

During flare ups I take 2tsp of the powder in a small glass of water (to allow it to reach my bladder in concentration) and follow it up with about 1/2 litre of water an hour later (to flush everything out). Then repeat as necessary.

To prevent infections i take one of the tablets daily with a pro biotic.

NanTheWiser · 16/07/2018 11:47

D-mannose is wonderful stuff. I've taken it in the past, when I was getting over an UTI as sometimes the infection doesn't quite clear up. Sweet Cures is the best site to get it, they deliver next day, and it's useful to keep on stand-by to take at the first sign of cystitis.

LissySJ · 16/07/2018 13:13

I found D-mannose really effective for preventing UTI's while having regular flare ups a few years ago. I took a tablet daily and it definitely reduced the amount I got. Luckily the flare ups seem to have passed and I rarely get UTI's now but I do still keep D-mannose for if I feel any symptoms starting.

glitterbiscuits · 16/07/2018 14:16

Thanks that's 3 positives! I'm going to order and hope it's here by tomorrow. I'm just going to take codeine as nothing else has touched the pain so far.

100% it's amazing!!!

TeaWithFelicity · 16/07/2018 14:38

It works IF it's an e coli infection (which is the most common type). I personally would recommend buying the urine dip stick tests - if it registers leukocytes AND nitrites it's an infection. I then take D Mannose and oil of oregano (which works on infections that aren't e coli). But I no longer by Sweet Cures as I did find them expensive, I buy the cheapest 1000mg tablets on Amazon. And Azo for the pain. But if the dip sticks don't register leukocytes and nitrites it's not an infection so avoid antibiotics and look into going back to the doctor to rule out anything else, as could be interstitial cystitis or pelvic floor dysfunction (my flare ups aren't infections, it's pfd)

glitterbiscuits · 16/07/2018 15:46

Thanks 2 more votes.
TeawithFelicity- how to you take oil of oregano? Funnily enough I ordered some dip sticks from EBay earlier. I was under the care of a urologist about 10 years ago but long term antibiotics did the trick. My self diagnosis is that I do have some elements of interstitial cystitis too. My bladder is often cross!

TeaWithFelicity · 16/07/2018 16:05

I take it diluted in olive oil, under the tongue. It burns! Then chug down with a pint of water! I take it every 3 hours during any infection/virus.

That's good you've ordered the strips! If you get leukocytes and blood in the urine but no nitrites, that could be a sign of interstitial cystitis, but go to the Interstitial Cystitis Network as there are 4 or 5 subcategories of Interstitial Cystitis which all need to be treated differently! (But GPs don't always know that!)

maxthemartian · 16/07/2018 17:04

It works really well for preventing UTIs and settling down bladder discomfort.
I haven't managed to shift a full-on UTI using just that but prevention is better than cure anyway.

Helendee · 17/07/2018 12:53

I find my bladder symptoms seem to begin with vaginal problems, usually bacterial vaginitis. Unfortunately I only succeed in getting rid of it for a few weeks before it recurs. Nightmare!

glitterbiscuits · 18/07/2018 12:20

Tablets arrived today. My bladder feels like it's burning. I will report back if it works.

OP posts:
glitterbiscuits · 19/07/2018 07:15

No better yet. I took loads yesterday. I will carry on until they are all gone
I'm also going to try to just have water today in case anything I have is irritating.

Mrbumpoid · 28/09/2019 14:15

@hownowhashbrowns
Hi - how many do you take a day?

Glitterybelle · 29/09/2019 09:57

Sadly didn't work for me. Optibac for women were great though... still on them to this day.

Mrbumpoid · 29/09/2019 10:07

Hello all,
With interstitial cystitis...

  1. can it come and go during the day? Sometimes mine can be painful but then suddenly I’m fine for a bit then it's back.

  2. did d-mannose help - how long to take effect?

  3. did tolterodine help - how long to take effect?

  4. did you follow the diet and did it help?

  5. how did yours start?

  6. did yours burn before and/or during and/or after peeing?

My consultant is currently deciding whether it is interstitial cystitis or just still recovering from three separate catheters after childbirth (2 months ago) and then some further surgery.

He hasn't done a cystoscopy yet.

Hi, I have just bought some d mannose for my 8 year old daughter who is currently having a stinging sensation when urinating and is experiencing an itchy vulva. Please could someoneet me know how many tablets of the d mannose I should give to her please? I am really hoping it works.
