Reassurance please re: teething and nappy rash (bit long, sorry)

Hello MNers

DS started cutting his first tooth yesterday and within a few hours developed the most horrendous nappy rash (he's never had it before) - bright red, all over his poor bum and his testicles - it's dry and on the point of blistering, in fact it looks like really bad sunburn.

I know there is no "official" recognition that one causes the other. But it bloody does.

I am washing his bum in the shower with a sponge as cotton wool and water too painful, 20 to 30 mins of air, barrier cream etc. His tooth isn't bothering him at all btw.

Anyway, (finally) the point of this post is ...

Those mums whose DC had teething and nappy rash - does it seem normal to

a) get the nappy rash so quickly
b) for it to be so bloody horrific looking
c) will it go when the tooth is through
d) should I expect this with every tooth

TIA - if I don't answer any kind replies straight away, I'm not trolling, I'm in the middle of making macaroni cheese

YEs it can happen so quickly - irrespective of cause.

Metanium seems to be very good for treating. Much better than sudocreme barrier.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 28/05/2007 20:58

Yep - horrific isn't it! I soaked some oats in the bath and dunked her in - that really seemed to help. It went away as quick as it came (apart from the time when thrush arrived)

I shall have a look for metanium tommorow, just using sudocrem at the mo. The porridge bath sounds interesting too ...

Thanks very much ... anyone else want to tell me to stop my lip quivering at the sight of DS's bum?

I also had the same with my wee boy. Never had it before then BAM it was really red and sore. I have found that baby powder really helped keep it dry. I really didn't want to use it & tried lots of "organic" treatments but gentle cleansing & ensuring it was really dry before putting on a wee bit of johnsons has kept his bot rash free. It cleared it up in a day so that was a relief for all concerned!

It does look horrible doesn't it MaPickle?
I can guarantee he will be OK though

BTW another vote here for metanium. Very, very good for bad nappy rash.

SlightlyMadSlug · 28/05/2007 21:24

But be warned metanium stains fabrics badly - and is horrid horrid stuff. Worth it though.

Bensonbluebird · 28/05/2007 21:27

Weleda calendula nappy cream works wonders, lotsof time with nappy off also really works. Glad the tooth isn't bothering him!

Thankyou all. I will get out the most food stained sleepsuits for the metanium, just in case
