Receding gum help

I need some advice please.
The gum round my bottom left back tooth has been sore for a few days now I thought maybe I'd eaten something sharp that had irritated it a bit had a good look in the mirror today and there is about a 5mm dip in the gum line I can see the root, I will ring the dentist tomorrow but expect it will be weeks before I can be seen. Can anyone suggest anything that will help the gum grow back?
Thanks

Doubt receded gums can grow back. Just brush well till your next appointment.

But don't brush hard! Receding gums can be caused by brushing too hard and literally wearing them away.

The exact same thing happened to me only it was on a crown tooth when the crown was about 10 years old. I went to my dentist who replied "that can happen sometimes" and offered no other info!! I've gotten used to feeling the gap in the gum with my tongue and no more gum has disappeared since this.
