Reflux misery- omprezole not really working

Generallyok · 04/07/2018 06:49

I have been suffering from reflux for a couple of months. Tried cutting usual culprits out ( choc, caffiene, tomatoes, onions) and raising bed. As it wasn't helping so I went to the GP and I'm on third week of omprezole. Some days are a little better but Im still getting slot of reflux. I know I've been very stressed recently which hasn't helped. I have to go back in a months time if not better and I know I will probably have to have endoscopy. Anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can try? I'm so desperate I think I would drink cats piss if it would help!

How many miiligrams are you taking? You need 40mgs prepay over at least 2 weeks for it to be effective.

Generallyok · 04/07/2018 07:00

Thanks schnubbins I'm only on 20mg. Should I call GP?

FaithEverPresent · 04/07/2018 07:03

Yeah ask to increase it. I take 40mg. If I try to reduce it I soon know. Alternatively esomeprazole works better for some people.

knockknockknock · 04/07/2018 07:10

Reflux is miserable isn't it. Try having small drinks of semi skimmed milk at very regular intervals as this can help reduce it. Didn't work for me but then neither has the 60 mg of omelrazole and ranitadine 😕

bluerunningshoes · 04/07/2018 07:43

when are you having your last meal?
having at least an hour between food & drink and bedtime helps.

I'm sure you've tried that already

schnubbins · 04/07/2018 08:20

I had really bad reflux with associated cough two years ago.I was coughing for months .Only when my Doctor increased the dosage did the reflux and the cough disappear and hasn't come back.Mine was just stress related and nothing to do with what I ate.

I have found that the removal of my gallbladder has done wonders for my reflux. Hardly suffer at all now.
Have you any gallstone related issues?

kitkatsky · 04/07/2018 18:18

Hi everyone who has commented on this post. Can I do a cheeky hijack? I thought I had a bit of reflux yesterday so hot some ranitidine from the pharmacist, but since lunchtime yesterday it hurts to swallow food and liquids- like it's going past a lump and the pain radiates a bit. Is this normal with reflux? I've never had it before and have terrified myself with google x

awkwardturtle · 04/07/2018 18:44

I am on Lanzoprazole and have been for some time. I am sure you have been told but it is really important to take it correctly. You need to take it on an empty stomach and then drink only water/black tea etc. i.e. don't take it with a cup of tea with milk. Then eat something between 30 minutes and 1 hour later. Anything before 30 mins and it hasn't had time to work - later than an hour and it is ineffectual. Good luck with your reflux. It's vile.

awkwardturtle · 04/07/2018 18:46

Also my GP recommended taking Gaviscon advance at night with the PPI in the morning. When I asked how much he just said to chug it down!!

Sweetandkind · 04/07/2018 20:07

Did u try eliminating gluten? That's what caused mine and it only took a few days before the reflux stopped. You have to be really strict to test if gluten is a trigger.

FaithEverPresent · 05/07/2018 07:26

kitkatsky I had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with functional dyspepsia and hiatus hernia. Definitely worth visiting your GP with symptoms like that though.

Greycat11 · 07/07/2018 11:05

I started off on 20mg but got it doubled up to 40mg, well I had option to take two as and when needed to. Def worth talking to your doctor again as trial and error to get the dose right for you.
On a side note and probably not relevant but since losing weight I don't need the tablets anymore.

wineandsunshine · 08/07/2018 07:36

I found ranitidine much better than omeprazole.

I would also look at your diet, it could be an intolerance somewhere which is causing flare ups. I had to pay privately after meds, endoscopy and worrying for months but eventually it was intolerance to MANY things I eat and hadn't realised.

I now control very well - good luck op I know exactly how you feel.

wineandsunshine · 08/07/2018 07:37

Please ignore my spelling above!!!

awkwardturtle · 08/07/2018 09:58

@wineandsunshine would be interested to know what foods cause flare ups for you. And have you been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia? Tx.

wineandsunshine · 08/07/2018 10:11

No hernia - consultant diagnosed trapped wind...and to take ranitidine when needed.

I had over 30 intolerances....main ones gluten, oats, ginger, cornflakes, melon....!

I now aim for GF diet (occasionally this doesn't happen!!) but I can honestly say it's changed my life re tummy issues!

awkwardturtle · 08/07/2018 10:38

Thanks wine. Might have to try going completely GF. I find nuts a problem and nut butters definitely set me off. Did consultant test for intolerances or was it trial and error?

wineandsunshine · 08/07/2018 11:55

Your welcome - no I paid privately to have it done and was worth every penny. I'm 35 and up to five years ago I had no problems so it's not something I've had since a child.
Wierd How our bodies change to foods!

Good luck trying GF if you can find a link there that's great!

Generallyok · 08/07/2018 14:09

Thanks so much for all your replies. I had many allergies as a child so interesting to read about your unknown allergies. Maybe I will give up gluten. I have given up dairy but willing to try anything. I am quite skinny so can't afford to loose any weight. I am also alot of spasms my neck which are quite scary.

Sorry me back again and a bit desperate. My GP away until Wednesday and I’m feeling really rough. Have finished course of Omprezole. Is there anything else I can try in the mean time. I want to be tested for HPylori but think I need to be off PPI for 2 weeks first. I’m off dairy and gluten, eating very small meals and still burping continually.

Sorry things are so bad at the moment. Are you very stressed at the moment. In my experience this always makes things worse. Is it worse at night or during the day?

Generallyok · 16/07/2018 13:43

Thanks awkward yes very stressed. I’m sat here crying right now as feeling so low.

wineandsunshine · 16/07/2018 14:23

Try ranatidine??

Spelling! You can buy OTC

awkwardturtle · 16/07/2018 14:28

Is the stress because you are worried about your reflux or is it related to something else? Other advice I have been given at various times is to make sure you are really well hydrated - drink loads of water. Don't get constipated and just try and breathe deep into your stomach. The stress will make you breathe into your lungs rather than deeper and if you can work on your breathing, it will help with the stress and the reflux. Have a look at this www.everydayhealth.com/gerd/take-a-deep-breath-for-gerd-relief.aspx

Also when my reflux is bad I sleep more upright in bed (bad for the back but better for the stomach.)

In the absence of your doctor, chat to your pharmacist and ask if there is anything else you can be doing/taking to help.

Good luck.
