is croup infectious to other babies?

my dd has had croup this week; she was quite unwell at the strat and has, of course, been off nursery, but can anyone tell me if it is actually infectious? we have been invited to a friend's tomorrow who i havent seen for ages but there will be a few of us there and much as i'd love to see them, i'd hate to spread any infection. have googled but nothing much said about infection.

croup is a specific symptom of an infection. The infection itself could be infectious. Does she have a temperature? Is she coughing up gunk?

If not, she is probably ok to go.

Sympathies to your dd - I had croup a couple of months ago for the first time - adults don't usually develop it! It was very unpleasant.

she doesnt have a temp anymore; she did at the start of the week but after some treatment, things have eased off considerably. she is returning to her usual cheeky self, still has a bit of a cough and a hoarse voice but could probably do with a bit of social contact as she's been stuck with me all week!

It was very scarey - I woke up in a lot of pain, unable to breathe lying down, and having serious difficulty breathing sitting up. (probably similar to an asthma attack).

It must be scary to see your dd going through that.

it was! we took her to a and e and they gave her a nebuliser. that and some oral steroids seemed to get her through th first couple of days.
i thought adults and lolder children couldnt get it. hpoe you are ok now.

I also thought adults and older children couldn't get it! My GP thought adults couldn't get it!

I have probably had it before very mildly, but without realising what it was.

Interestingly, my mother had her first (and so far only) croup attack at the age of 58! That is the only time I have ever known her to call out a doctor in the middle of the night.

Sympathy - my ds1 had croup badly and it is very frightening. He used to get it whenever he was breaking a cold - the first night that the cold was coming, so no warning. He was always fine, if sniffly, the next day, and I was never advised to keep him off nursery etc.

Sympathies too Belgo. Our GP had just started having croup, so he was very sympathetic!

at your GP not knowing that adults can get it!
