Codeine and paracetamol

I've been taking both codeine and paracetamol regularly since being in hospital a few weeks ago. I saw a different GP this morning who was questioning my dose. I'm taking codeine every 4 hours, and paracetamol every 6 as I know I shouldn't take more than 4 doses in 24 hours, and I need it during the night.

GP said it was important to take the maximum dose of paracetamol I could, to run alongside the codeine - he said to take it every 4 hours. I could do that during the day, but at night when the pain is worse, I really need to take it around 2 am. Surely I can't take paracetamol every 4 hours, 24 hours a day, to be reviewed in a month?

For a standard size adult 1g (two tablets) 4x a day is the max dose. So if you've only been taking 1 tablet then there is some potential for taking more. If you're particularly scrawny/ malnourished then you should probably be on less than 1g. Do not be tempted to take 6g/day regularly.

Thanks Walking I’ve been taking 2 x 500 paracetamol 4 times a day. And boy I wish I was scrawny - I’m clinicaly obese Blush
