Lethargic after hospital stay

My mother was in hospital for a week after being diagnosed with seriously low potassium.

She was discharged last Friday but is still very weak and tired. I rang the hospital and they said that her doctor had told her it would be a few weeks before she was back to normal.
She had to go back to her GP this morning for blood tests (the hospital said to do this for follow up) and will be seeing her GP, who is brilliant and always puts her in good form, on Monday.

But I've never seen her so exhausted and dispirited. She says the only time she doesn't feel tired is when she's in bed and is in general low mood.

Could this be depression and is this normal when someone has been very ill in hospital?

My mum is in her eighties.

A hospital stay is really disrupting & it takes a while to get over (especially as you get older). If you've been seriously unwell it takes even longer (you don't say what it was that was causing the low potassium). Add in the fact that it's pretty hot & sweaty out at the moment, it's probably completely understandable that your mum's wiped out. Sounds like her GP's doing a good job so hopefully they'll spot if there's anything medical making things worse. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Thanks Walking. The low potassium was due to various medication she had been taking for blood pressure and a recurrent kidney infection.
