My teenager had a grommet fitted 12 months ago because she had a lot of fluid in the middle ear and a significant loss to hearing. Everything has been fine for about 10 months, no pain, discharge or hearing problems. About 8 weeks ago, she felt a popping sensation in the ear, some pain and hearing "was fuzzy". I took her to the doctor to see what was going on and to check for any sign of infection. The doctor said it looked like the grommet may have moved a little as it looked a bit further forward than he would have expected it to be. There was no sign of infection and as he said the grommet now looked to be in a fixed position, as well as the pain having settled, he thought it best to leave it alone. She had no further pain or discomfort and hearing returned to normal. Until yesterday.......
A strange sensation in the ear and reduced hearing when she tilts her head forward, which I think indicates fluid in the middle ear!? I've tried to make a doctors appointment but there's no spare appointments for 2 weeks. Big concern is that she's going away on a school holiday next week for 10 days. I obviously don't want this to be an issue while she's away or for it to be an extra thing for teachers to deal with. But, it's not an emergency so I can't go to A&E can I? Has anyone had a similar experience or can offer any suggestions. She's got ibuprofen and has ear plugs to wear to keep water out of ear in case there's any sign of infection cropping up but I'd ideally like this looking at before she goes. Does the grommet need to come out?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
