Sudden pain in jaw joint

Bunnybutton · 24/06/2018 22:50

as I was eating my dinner I got this sudden pain in the joint of my right jaw , the discomfort continued as I opened my mouth and when I was chewing my food .
( The pain is like when You have done to much excersise and you have that pain ).

It feels worse as the evening has gone on .
I haven't had an injury to my jaw .
However for a very long time my right jaw joint has always clicked and everything I opened my mouth it would seem to come out of place ( like a bone sliding over and popping into another groove , that was never painful.
( I'm in my late 20's )
Any advice ?

Your jaw shouldn't click, it's a sign the joint isn't working properly and your chewing has probably strained it a bit much this evening. Try an ice pack and some ibuprofen.

Do you grind your teeth at night? That would cause the clicking, as would poor alignment of your teeth. You should see about getting a splint of some sort from the dentist if that's the case.

I suffered with this for years OP. I had a mouth guard to wear at night to stop me grinding my teeth, not sure if I actually did tho. This did nothing. Then I had 3 procedures where they 'flushed' the joint which only helped very slightly for a couple of months and then was back to how it was before. My jaw made an awful noise and would ache terribly.

I ended up having an MRI and there's a little disc that sits in the joint and mine had dislodged or gone I don't really know tbh! I had an operation where they put a little metal disc in and problem solved! I put up with it for years. Go and see your gp as it won't resolve by itself and ime will only get worse.

I had a lot of the symptoms you describe and thought it would never get better, but it did!

I had a lot of pain and simply could not open my mouth very far. Chewing something like a toffee was agony. The GP and later a maxo facial consultant had me on a soft diet for 6 weeks or so. I was dubious but it worked! No problems at all now and it had been going on for 3 years or so.

Is it TMJ? I get flare ups like this a few times a year that last 6-10 weeks or so

I've don't think I grind my teeth , the clicking happens when I open my mouth wide and has done for years.
It still hurts today , I don't think I will bother my gp unless I'm in absolute agony and it won't go away . I've had lots of issues with my health recently and it seems to be one think after the other 😫. Thanks for the advice :)

I find my jaw joint hurts when my hay fever is bad, weirdly! I wonder if it's linked to my ears being irritated by the pollen. It hurts to chew food, not majorly but definitely there
