anaemia, spatone and pregnacare

Hi, the midwife told me I'm anaemic (iron levels 9.6, 29 weeks pregnant) and suggested taking spatone. I'm already taking pregnacare daily, which has 17mg of iron in. Does anyone know if it's ok to take a sachet of spatone on top of the pregnacare (my midwife didn't know!). Thanks.

hi emylou, im also anaemic & pregnant. g.p prescribed iron tabs 200mg they also come in 300's & 400's. i think spatone has less than 10mg(but i'd check first)so maybe still not enough. try eating more red meat, green veg, dried apricots & i think dark chocolate.

Hi there - the difference is that you use far more of the iron that's in Spatone. The reason you have to take such big iron tablets is that they're made with chemicals that your body just can't absorb easily, so you have to take loads for even a bit to get through.. that's why you get such awful side effects sometimes!
Spatone is far better assimilated so more of it is useful.
Yes, you could have a sachet with your pregnacare (or actually a different time of day would be better). They recommend two during pg., and your body only uses as much as you need.

at a midwife suggesting Spatone! My GP looked at me funny when I mentioned it, and said 'Don't take anything from a health store!'.
I was on Fersamal syrup (prescribed) and she then prescribed tablets (pregaday?) but she said, 'You have to take two of these a day. Personally I couldn't stomach more than one every other day'...so I went and got some spatone, and it's lovely, I mean it just goes into a tiny glass of juice, so easy to take after struggling for weeks with the nasty gloop.
Am hoping it is working better too. I'm sorry I don't know if you can take both at once, but according to the box, Spatone has your daily requirement in one sachet, if you aren't Pg; if you are, it says take two.
Lulumama knows loads about it and can often be found on the Pg board!
At 29 weeks you have lots of time to get your iron up.
Good luck!

Thanks for your replies; I phoned spatone and they said I could take up to 2 sachets in addition to my pregnacare, so figure I'm ok with taking one anyway.
