Upper endescopy

I am due to have upper endescopy on Tuesday to diagnose me, I think I have gastroduodenal chrohns. Had colonoscopy which I was nervous about but found it ok in the end. The results came back clear so they were unable to treat me. I am very nervous and the consultant has suggested to have a deep sedative which I don't like the idea of. Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

I had an endoscopy without a sedative. I went on my own and honestly, it was fine. It was uncomfortable but the nurse stroked my head Grin and it didn't last long. I concentrated on counting in my head to 30 (no idea why) and it kept my calm. The worst bit was it poking around in your stomach rather than going down your throat. Also it meant I could leave straight after. Do what's best for you though Smile

It’s fine without. It was nice to basically sit back up and go home while the others who were sedated were wheeled off for an hr or two in recovery. I had four biopsies done as well and really it was fine. Not pleasant but I wouldn’t have sedation if I had to have another.

The burping after is impressive though!

And it was prob 2-3 mins. It was literally over before I knew it. It would have been even quicker without the biopsies.

Ok without!

I had mine without sedation also.
The nurse was lovely-talking and stroking my hair and wiping my eyes!
I made some very odd sounds when they pulled the tube back out and I remember trying to laugh!!
Honestly it is not nice at all-not painful but just a very weird feeling-unnatural.
It was over before it had begun and I agree the fact I could sit up and walk out of the room and go home straight afterwards was a huge plus and my reasoning for not having any sedation.
I had a Colonoscopy with sedation and felt everything-was very painful so I guess everyone's experiences are different with these things.
Good luck I am sure you will be ok

Had one without sedative and it really wasn’t enjoyable at all. But it literally lasted about 2 mins and then I could go home

I don't think I'd manage an endoscopy without sedation. But I have a very sensitive gag reflex. Even with sedation it wasn't pleasant, but obviously it's necessary.

What are your concerns about the sedation?

All the best for your procedure Flowers
