Periods, the Pill and side effects

I'm 38. From 19 until 31 when we were TTC, I was on the pill. I don't really remember what my periods were like in my teens before the pill. Since having kids (at almost 33 and 35) I've not really gone back on the pill. After 2 pregnancies close together my hormones were a bit all over the place and the last thing I wanted to do was pump myself full of even more. After DS2 I didn't have a period for 6 months, had the injection and then didn't have another period until DS2 was 18 months. I can't describe how or why, but I feel better and more like myself when I'm not on the pill. My sex drive was non-existent when I was had the injection and my moods were pretty low. But I realise this could be because of other stuff going on at the time like a new job and two kids aged 3 and under!!

The problem is my periods are really heavy, to the point where I'm leaking in the night even with a tampon and pad on. I recently found out I'm anameic, quite seriously so and this is now being put down to my periods. I've been to see a gynecologist and had an ultrasound. Everything looks normal downstairs and gynecologist has referred me back to the GP with the helpful advice of I can either leave my periods as they are or go onto the pill to stop them.

I don't know what to do for the best. Realistically the pill is my best option but I just want to go throw months of finding the right one and my mood suffering in the process. It doesn't help GP is unwilling to prescribe the one I used to be on in my 20's cos of my age after having kids. I see the GP next week. Any advice in the meantime?!
