Lymph node question

SausageSimon · 20/06/2018 21:41

I've just found a swollen and painful lump in my neck kind of under my jaw. I'm assuming it's a lymph node, would the other side also be swollen if so?
Never had this before so wanted to ask!

No both lymph nodes do not need to be swollen at the same time. The lymph node closest to the infection is usually the one to swell so a one-sided one could indicate an ear infection for example. If you have no other symptoms to suggest an infection in your body and the lymph node doesn't go down in a day or two I'd make a gp appointment.

Thank you for the info!! I tried googling but google didn't seem to get what I was asking Grin
I have had a sore/swollen throat so I'm guessing it'll be because of that but was unsure with it being on one side.
It's never swollen up before so thought it was unusual!

Is it normal for them to be painful?

Painful lymph nodes are normal especially after infection. Can take ages (weeks) to reduce. Would see GP if doesn't reduce after at least a couple of weeks, or if rapidly enlarges. Cancers of lymph nodes typically painless. Pain is your friend here.

Fantastic to hear that pain is a good sign, will keep an eye on it though!

My grandad had cancer in his lymph nodes in his 40s so it did come to mind.
