Risk of Down's Syndrome?

Hello, I very rarely post on here but I'm on a mission for some information / advice!
My husband's sister-in-law is about 16 wks pregnant (her 2nd pregnancy, which has taken ages to happen - she's had about 4 miscarriages since her 1st daughter, 2 1/2 yrs ago) and has just had blood test results back showing that she has a 1:79 risk of the baby having Down's Syndrome (she is 32). When she was 12 wks pregnant, she was admitted to hospital for a week on an IV drip, as she was being really really sick and fainting a lot. Can any of this all be linked? She's going for an amnio tomorrow, and has to wait a week for the results to come back.
My mother-in-law is naturally very concerned, and is trying to find out as much information as she possibly can, both for herself and my brother-in-law.

Hi there, downs syndrome and any other genetic problem would be decided at the moment of conception (or very soon after) - being ill during the pg could not influence these type of conditions at all.

There are lots of false positives with the screening tests like the nuchal scans. Plenty of people get odd like that or even higher and still go on to have non-Downs babies. Equally, some get very good odds and are still the 1 in 1000 or whatever.

As you know, the only way to be sure is the amnio - horrible to have to wait I know but fingers crossed she will get told everything is genetically normal.

I think the blood test results can be quite unreliable - is it too late for her to get a nuchal fold scan as well?

Also keeping fingers crossed as 1 in 79 quite good odds -when I was scanned at fetal medecine centre in london they said they tend to only recommend further tests where you're at 1 in 100 so your sil is still at the better end of the range where you end need to test (and there is 78 chance that baby is ok)

Hi. My blood test when pregnant with DD3, showed chance of DS 1 in 90. She does have Downs, but saying that I know many people whose blood tests showed a higher chance than mine, and who didn't go on to have a baby with DS.
As for the symptoms you describe being linked to a higher chance of baby having Downs, I'm not aware of that being the case, and am pretty sure it means nothing with regards to this. My pregnancy was problem free.

I think the OP is wondering whether a pregnancy with baby with Down Syndrome would result in sickness, not the other way round. I know several women you were very sick during pregnancy requiring hospitalisation and all had healthy babies.

good point chipmonkey - know someone who was hospitalised for some weeks with both her sons with this and both were born healthily.

Yes, you're right Chipmonkey, am wondering whether a pregnancy with baby with Down Syndrome would result in sickness - someone told my MIL yesterday that this was a possibility, in combination with her risk ratio of 1:79.

my sister in law gets very ill with pregnancy and she has had two healthy babes so far.

In my first pregnancy - with dd1 who has down syndrome - no problems aside from some morning sickness.

My SIL had a baby at 35 about 6 months ago. She had a nuchal fold test and got quite a high probability of having a downs baby due to her age. She also had quite bad sickness (the first time with any of her pregnancies and she's got 4 kids). I'm pleased to say she had a healthy baby boy so no, I don't think it's related.

I had a risk of 1 in 60. I had an amnio but daughter didn't have Downs. I had a lot more morning sickness than I had with my son.

More than average sickness can sometimes be linked to twins, can't it? And can't twins play havoc with the results of the blood tests? Is your SIL sure she's not having twins? (Just a thought. Could be wrong, as I didn't have the blood tests myself, so just going on what I've read.)
