Anti-biotics making me feel so unwell

I'm taking Co-Amoxiclav and Metronidazole both 3x a day for 2 weeks due to PID. I am 3 days in and I am really starting to feel very sick and just generally really out of it from taking them. I'm super hungry but feel unable to eat.

Is there anything I can do to make these next 2 weeks more barely whilst I take these?

TIA

You could try a good quality probiotic. I would recommend cytoplan- they do a powdered one which is very good as a ‘rescue’ and you can continue it once course of antibiotics is complete to rebuild your gut bacteria.

Frosty66612 · 14/06/2018 12:26

Metronadizole is the work of the devil. Evil stuff!
I agree with the pp about taking a good probiotic that will help to bring back some good bacteria that the antibiotics will be wiping out.

Watching with interest, I’m on heavy duty antibiotics for blood poisoning and they’re horrendous.

OP I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thank you both, I shall order some now first next day delivery

It's ideal to make sure that the probiotics you choose are formulated to survive being taken during the course of antibiotics.
You also might like to look into saccharomyces boulardii (it's a non pathogenic yeast) in some countries it's prescribed along with antibiotics

I agree metronazidole is horrid. See if you can get some anti-nausea meds. Cyclizine (an antihistamine similar to Stugeron, used for seasickness) is good and is I think one of those drugs that's available otc at the pharmacist's discretion. Or your doc could write you w script for it. Metocopramide is also good for nausea but makes me very tired.

HyacinthsBucket70 · 14/06/2018 23:29

Metronidazole is one of the worst I've ever taken. It made me feel really queasy and gave me a horrid taste in my mouth. I went through packs of sugar free polos while on it.

Try making some veg packed home made soups to keep your vitamin levels up, and also some good probiotics. If you're not eating much, try to make it good calories.

JaneJeffer · 14/06/2018 23:44

It's horrible stuff but you just have to stick it out. I have IBS and I find probiotics don't agree with me either so I wouldn't add to the mix. Drink plenty of water and just rest as much as possible.

Le1890 · 15/06/2018 04:41

I have been on three lots of antibiotics at once this week to treat pneumonia.

Like you by day 3 I was feeling so sick. I bought probiotics, took anti sickness tablets as and when needed (gp prescripbed them) and rode it out. I also made sure I ate something before taking them. I don’t know if the ones you are taking say without food so then you couldn’t do that but if they don’t would say it’s worth a try. I didn’t feel like eating but started off with just a half slice of toast.

I would say by day 5 the nausea had passed.

Hope it passes for you and you get some relief.

Le1890 hope you are on a swift road to recovery!

Thank you all, taking on board suggestions for sure!

Need some more help though please!

Has anyone else had experience of severe stomach cramping, diarrhoea, headaches and feeling feverish (yet to take temp as still in the office!!!! idk how I will make it home) on these? I feel so rough today.

JaneJeffer · 15/06/2018 15:39

Yes I had awful headaches and sick stomach. Would you be able to take some sick leave to recuperate ?

Tack · 15/06/2018 15:41

I probably should, I haven't taken any yet but I am still restively new to the job ( 5 months in) and we are currently going through a really important part of a project, I would be concerned my DM thought I was flaking when things were getting tough

Floeer · 15/06/2018 15:43

(Honestly I am the biggest NC failure on MN haha. I try and keep my Feminist NN different to my general one because I don't like having my personal life potentially used as a way to attack)

moreismore · 15/06/2018 15:46

Hope you feel better soon!

Just a follow up on Carefully’s suggestion - I had never heard of that probiotic before but this paper makes interesting reading (possibly more so if you’re a bit geeky!!) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3296087/#!po=29.5699

Would certainly be worth looking into.

JaneJeffer · 15/06/2018 15:49

Wrong thread Floeer?

You'd be better able to do the work if you were feeling better though. Maybe just give some major hints that you're feeling unwell and see if they suggest some time off?

Floeer · 15/06/2018 15:50

Yeah a family friend suggested the Optibac brand of saccharomyces boulardii so I've ordered that, should be arriving tomorrow!

Floeer · 15/06/2018 15:52

JaneJeffer yeah I am flitting between threads so, as usual, had a massive NC fail. I'll grasp the hang of it one day!

Deadline is Tuesday though so I couldn't take Monday off really. Hopefully weekend will be enough rest, although with an 11 month old DS there isn't really such thing as rest, especially when he still wakes 3 x a night for a feed !

JaneJeffer · 15/06/2018 15:52

Oh I see, not the wrong thread! Hope the probiotics help.
