My husband rolled his ankle yesterday and this morning he has bruising and swelling around the ankle bone - he says the pain feels deep. Do you think it's just a sprain or should we take him for an X-ray ?

Hi, I would get an X-ray to be on the safe side. You can't tell anything unless you do.

I think if it were broken he would be in more pain and it would be more swollen. before A&E try a bag of frozen peas and elevate the leg if possible. Rolling over on your ankle doesn't usually result in a break in an adult man.

It just looks like a foot to me.
Do you have a minor injuries clinic? That's usually quicker than sitting in A and E. A torn ligament or sprain can be really painful so he can at least have it strapped up or be prescribed painkillers.
