I had a bad back a few years ago - ruptured/bulging disks, lots of bad pain in my lower back and down my leg. I took diclofenic (sp?) and oramorph, rested and it improved.

Nothing since, but I put my back out at the weekend. Been resting but now starting to get an ache down the back of my leg.

What can I do to try to stop it getting as bad as last time? Exercise/stretches? Rest? Baths?

I really can't face that again if I can help it.

These episodes usually take a few weeks to resolve as you now know. Ice or heat can help. I only take codeine and paracetamol - I am saving the harder drugs for my old age! Once you are better you need to get your core strength up and you might be able to stop it happening again. The nerve pain/sciatica - rest when its really bad but don't take to bed for longer than a day.
