Bleeding after a smear test

I’ve never had this before, not even when I had CIN3 about 15 years ago, But today the nurse had a good scrape around and I’ve been lightly bleeding ever since (when I wipe). Is this a bad sign?

I did have a swab for infection a few months ago after itchiness driving me nuts and a tiny spot of blood after sex, it showed thrush but nothing else. Canestan hasn’t got rid of it though.

Panicking slightly! Have had 3 GP’s and a nurse inspect the cervix over the past couple of years but they saw nothing. Last smear was 2015. Does it sound dodgy?

No it’s common to have slight bleeding after smears especially if they are a tad rough. I had my first one a few months back and bled panicked but my friend said she always does after having hers mine came back fine

I don't think it's a bad sign. I've bled before and I think, as you said, it was just a big scrape. I've never had any concerning results.

KellyBailey · 11/06/2018 16:04

I've had spotting and cramps after a smear before, results came back normal so it wasn't anything to worry about in my case.

FrolickingForklift · 11/06/2018 16:05

Perfectly normal, they usually warn me that I might bleed a little bit doesn't always happen

QueenoftheNights · 11/06/2018 16:32

It's not a scrape, they use a tiny bottle brush and twiddle it around The old wooden spatulas went out a few years ago. It has to go right into the cervical opening to get those cells and these are fragile (different to the tough cells outside the cervix) and they can bleed.

I had blood when I'd never had/notices before and my smear result was fine.

It’s really hard not to fear the worst isn’t it. If it was bad do you think they’d phone rather than send a letter in several weeks time?

Bleeding nearly stopped, just a few brown spots when wipe.

I’ve had 3 smear tests and bled after the third one. All came back normal. I think it’s fairly common and nothing to worry about.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/06/2018 20:02

It's entirely normal to bleed, don't worry.

Lemons1571 · 12/06/2018 07:58

Ugh had calmed down this morning until went to the toilet and a big glob of dark red / black blood fell out. Still trying not to panick Sad

If it makes you feel better, it probably means you had a decent smear.

GPs have astonishly poor rates of actually taking the sample correctly from the cervix - national screening guidelines take this into account, since half the time you aren't really having a proper screen!

Don't worry, but next time see a gynae not a GP

*astonishingly

Lemons1571 · 12/06/2018 08:52

This was a nurse. It didn’t hurt at all but I could feel the brush going round and round and round, just like cleaning out a bottle with a bottle brush.

I suppose that previous smears (and I’ve had a lot) I only got the tiniest orange discharge. Even the colposcopy hardly bled at all.

It really helps posting on here, thank you
