Wisdom tooth pain

It's been going on since Thursday.

I think it's the gum OVER the tooth that's hurting most, coupled with my other teeth being pushed together.

It's so painful.. my ear and down my neck are hurting now too. Opening my mouth hurts. Swallowing hurts.

I've tried ibuprofen, corsodyl mouthwash and even my babies anbesol 😂

What else can I do?!

Dentist here. Make an appointment tomorrow. I see All patients in pain same day. You may well need antibiotics for the gum infection.

Take ibuprofen and paracetamol. Try to bathe the area in hot salt water very frequently. If you can bear to, dip your tooth brush in corsadyl or salt and brush the area.

Your symptoms are absolutely typical and will settle, but antibiotics will speed this up hugely. Removing the upper wisdom tooth (which is catching the gum) would provide instant and often long term relief, with far fewer risks than removing the lower one. Sounds daft but is frequently the answer. I quite often offer this along side the antibiotics at the emergency appointment. Normally an extremely quick job.

Just to add to Bonzo’s helpful post, I had my upper wisdom tooth out last year because of a similar situation, although I had antibiotics first then a second appointment the following week. I was terrified, but it was, I swear, like taking the top off a bottle. The dentist said “do you want to see the tooth?” and I hadn’t even realised it was out, it was so quick.

THat should help enormously. But might take 24-48 hrs to kick in.

bigbluehouse · 11/06/2018 14:00

He said it's a pretty horrible antibiotic so I'm hoping it's not too bad.

I'm unsure if I can still use the ibuprofen too though :(

I had metronidazole last year. Really was ok. But no drinking while taking it or for 48 hrs after.

You are fine to continue to take both ibuprofen and paracetamol with it (provided you can take them normally). Ditto the salt / corsadyl.

Amazing. Thanks so much for your help!

I literally feel your pain OP! I have almost exactly the same issue! My started over the weekend around my wisdom tooth although mine is completely through the gum and has been for ages.

Woke up this morning and couldn't swallow without pain/couldn't open my mouth properly and was in awful pain Sad awful isn't it! It was so bad that I had to call in sick to work (I'm a teacher and no way could I have stood and taught all day).

I have the same antibiotic as you and I am using paracodol for pain as I am allergic to ibuprofen. It's helping but felt so I'll earlier (really sick).

Hoping I get sleep tonight and that I can go to work tomorrow. Thankfully my boss is lovely and has been so sympathetic!

@PumpkinPie2016 I really feel for you :(

Did you see the dentist today?

I'm actually AMAZED how much better I feel since even this morning, nevermind the last few days. The dentist told me the tooth itself is fine, it's the gum which has an infection (I'm assuming from it being constantly chewed on!)

I hope you feel better soon x

Yes I did - thankfully they got me in at half ten . Like you, my tooth is fine but the infection is in the gum and a glad near my jaw.

I'm glad you are starting to feel better! I'm still feeling rough but hoping sleep will help - i didn't get much sleep last night x
