Babies and underwater swimming - teaching them yourself

ALL of our local pools only teach courses for 6 month olds, so my LO missed the summer term (as he is 6 months tomorrow) and I can't take him next term because I return to work, - so I want to take him myself!

Can anyone tell me if it is safe to let go of him in the water? I've ducked him under a few times and he doesn't seem too bothered. He splashes himself in the face too and laughs, but he really seems to want to wriggle away! If I let him will he drown?
