Had to take some codeine for a bad back recently and it made me severely constipated when i finally was able to go the stool was really hard and quite large it was extremely painful to pass and since then going to the toilet for a number 2 has been awful to the point where I'm almost in tears also when ive wiped there has been blood... I've taken some over the counter pain relief but nothing is helping can anyone help in recommending anything else.

I'm very sorry about the tmi I've spoken to dh as he asked me what's taking so long and why I come out looking ill and shakey he doesn't know what to suggest other then pain relief and upping fiber intake which is what i am doing.

Going on holiday next week and really want this to be sorted by then!

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Psyllium husk capsules from Holland and Barrett and lots of water. Anusol hc from Boots. Prep h moist toilet wipes contain witch hazel I think which keeps the area clean. Stay away from white bread cake biscuits for a bit. Try some liquorice? Or sweets with sweetener ... they can cause diarrhoea.

Poor you - sounds like you’ve got an anal fissure. Like pp said stool softeners, lots of water, lots of fibre, try to relax your anal sphincter which goes into spasm (not easy when it feels like you’re shitting razor blades). Good luck!

Prunes, oats, and bran for breakfast.
Try Lactulose as well. The psyllium husk is a bulking agent and you mix with a water or juice (also sold as fibogel in sachets) but lactulose softens the stool. You must also drink loads of water.

After codeine tablets, my DH swears by probiotic drinks for about a week, helps both his gut and his regularity.

I have been suffering with this for over a year and I really strongly suggest you get it sorted ASAP as if it becomes chronic it is a nightmare! (If it’s a fissure which it sounds like!) best thing I’ve found is a softener prescribed by GP called laxido - one sachet a day mixed with water at bedtime. Bran flakes for breakfast every day and try and have a regular bowel movement - ie every morning after breakfast or whatever. Lots of water and up your fibre intake. There is also an ointment called GTN you can take which helps if you are having pain for hours after bowel movement which is caused by spasm but it can cause severe headaches, I was fortunate it wasn’t too bad for me in that regard. Good luck and defo get to GP to get it sorted ASAP.

Also forgot to say - I was prescribed a numbing gel called instillagel which you put on about 10 mins before BM and it numbs the area which really helped until it clears up, but not suitable for long term use. And the best best thing is to get straight into a bath afterwards. Good luck x

Yes, as said above sounds like a fissure, it only takes one bad bathroom moment to cause a pesky cut in your bum. Nothing more to add except never have a big hard poo again. I have struggled with a fissure for over a year and am currently seeing a specialist. I eat copious amount of figs and prunes and fruit and veg and drink lots of water. Hopefully you will heal quickly, mine was complicated by piles too which added to the misery.
