Poor you, I've had a run of really bad ones recently and throat pain is nasty. Best things I found were: gargling with soluble aspirin (make sure you do it for a few minutes) - this one works really well before a meal, as it dulls/numbs pain for at least half an hour if not more.
Also, a spoonful of Manuka honey: I was sceptical (advice from MN couple of weeks ago) but it really, really helped. I had the +10 sort. Repeat as often as you like, the more the better (unless diabetic, I imagine).
Hot lemon, ginger, and honey (with a dash of whiskey if you fancy it/can take it) is soothing and feels nice. Or Lemsip, for that matter.
Sweets and sprays that numb the throat helped me for a few mintues, then made it, if anything, worse - when the effect wore off.
