chicken pox - what if anything to put on the spots

DS (nearly 6) only started to come out in spots yesterday and so far hasn't complained about itching or anything. We've forgone a shower tonight as I didn't want to do anything that might aggravate them.
I've bought some Calomine aqueous cream but not sure if I should put them on the spots anyway to help them heal or if I should only be using it to ease any itching.
Your advise, as always, greatly appreciated.

Bicarb of soda in the bath and make up a paste of bicarb with a little water and dot on the spots if they get itchy. Best thing I've found.

Piriton syrup is good for them to take too and the consensus seems to be that calamine lotion is worse than useless as it dries and gets itchy.

thanks all. I did a search and have read lots of the messages twelveyeargap (there were soooo many ) but couldn't find an answer to this exact question.

I'm happy now with what I've bought lotion wise (and I did get some Piriton just in case) but I just wasn't sure when to actually use the cream.

Good luck and be prepared to sleep with DS if it gets really bad, camp out in the lounge if needs be and have all lotions and potions at the ready. thinking of yous

I never put anything on either of mine when they had chicken pox. Have been caring for my sister's children this week who have chicken pox now, and she hasn't been putting any creams on them either.

Aloe Vera gel apparantly, forever living products. Keep it in the fridge and spray it on. Let me know if you want some I know a lady who sells it. It's not cheap but it can be used for a multitude of other things like stings, rashes etc.

NHS Direct recommends putting lotion containing calamine on the spots, plus warm baths. Several people also recommended adding baking powder to baths. DS (10 months) has had chicken pox this week and I followed all of the above. He has not scratched the spots, so perhaps it's all helped.
