Anyone had a thyroidectomy?

My thyroid has multiple (non cancerous) nodules which are now becoming obvious and the only solution is surgical removal. Has anyone had this operation? Would be grateful for any advice/RL experiences. Thanks.

Mine was a long time ago when I was 21, I'm now 49. I had a suspicious lump which didn't appear to be normal tissue. The surgery remove 5/8ths of my thyroid and the lump turned out to be a simple adenoma (non-cancerous). My remaining gland struggled on for about 10 years then I had to start taking Thyroxine for Hypothyroidism.

I have a wide, thin scar, right across the bottom of my neck which doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Watching with interest. Youngest DD (12) needs a thyroidectomy. Seeing the surgeon next month. Is yours booked yet OP?

Not booked yet, I need to investigate the pros and cons between going private vs health service here in Portugal (I'm a tax payer but my Portuguese is shite!). According to the last blood tests in November my thyroid is still working OK but I think it needs to go before it gets much bigger.
