I'm devastated to see what I think is a cold sore on my 18 month old's lower lip - is there anything else that it could be? Two small, red bumps next to each other in the corner of her mouth. I have had cold sores three times during her lifetime - first when she was born which meant that I couldn't kiss her for five days!! I have tried to be so, so careful not to touch her and feel terrible that it looks like she's got them anyway.
Has anyone got children with cold sores? Any treatments you'd suggest? Do they also get them when they are run down, like adults? she's had colds on and off since January when she started nursery two mornings a week...

emkay - my dd2 had cold sores. I have never had one in my life, and have definitely not given them to her, so don't beat yourself up about that, she could have got them anywhere.

Anyway, I was given Cymex cream, and I have found that it really works - you can see a noticeable improvement after a day or two and they are gone after a week.

You can buy it over the counter.

Thank you both, we took her to the doctor today and he diagnosed impetigo... has prescribed Nystatin and another topical cream. I'm confused though - I thought that impetigo was highly infectious and meant zero contact with other little ones and no nursery. However the doc has said that it's okay for us to have friends with little ones over on Sunday and said nothing about keeping her off nursery...
Very glad it's not cold sores so counting my blessings.
