Coeliac bloods

Bowwowjangles · 11/05/2018 10:37

I've recently had a blood test for coeliac as I've got macrocytic anaemia. I'm on patient access and can see they have only done a total iga which has been flagged as 3 g/l
The range being 0.8 - 2.8
The Dr has commented OK, The serum IgA is measured to assess IgA status of, patient prior to performing coeliac screen.

So I rang the receptionist as this test was done on 13th April and asked if more bloods due back but she said there isn't. Am I right in saying they haven't actually tested me for coeliac ?

My sister is a coeliac and as far as I was aware (via me being tested) the only true test is an endoscope to see if damage has been done via the samples they take?

The igA blood test is just a screen test as far as I'm aware and if it suggests a positive then a biopsy of small intestine is recommended via the endoscopy.

You can get false positives and negatives so again only true test is the above which will show issues.

If you pop to the coeliac website for info they have it all down for you for reading.

Hope that helps.

Hi Gryffen yes thank you. I'm seeing a gastro on 18th but wanted to have results really prior. I think they may have made a boob

Do you know if they did the Tissue transglutaminase antibody (tTG) test. That's the main coeliac screen test now I think. They can take a couple of weeks to come back.

I don't really understand it! I thought normal range for TTG was up to 7.
