Tonsolith/ tonsil stone?

egdehsdrawkcab · 09/05/2018 22:28

For about a week I've had a feeling like a popcorn kernel stick fight at the back of my tongue. Thinking it would come loose I've ignored it, but had a look tonight and it's a small white spot on the edge of my right tonsil.

Dr Google suggests anything from throat cancer to tonsil stones. Does anyone have any experience of the latter? Is what I'm describing a common symptom? And how do I get rid?

I've been on two rounds of antibiotics on the last month for chest infection, lots of mucus and coughing which probably hasn't helped....

Any help much appreciated. It doesn't hurt but is really very annoying.

Squeeze it out with a cotton bud. If it’s a tonsil stone it will STINK!!!

egdehsdrawkcab · 09/05/2018 22:35

I can't get to it without wrenching/gagging!

Have you tried gargling with TCP or salt a few times a day?
My DS currently has 1, same feeling at the back of the throat, there are suggestions on line about nudging them with a cotton bud or tooth brush, but I am not about to try that on him

Oh I LOVE tonsil stones. They smell absolutely disgusting but it's like a sporn feeling when I cough one up Grin

I get them quite often, more so when I've had a cold.

You can soften your gag reflex by squeezing your left thumb in your left fist. A gentle poke with a q-tip or a clean finger should yield a result from there!

Blanikbalm · 09/05/2018 22:54

I have one. At least one. I can't tolerate my tonsil being touched at all, im gagging and retching and now feel sick but I can't leave it knowing it's there. Please help! How do you get to it without vomiting??

MazDazzle · 09/05/2018 22:55

Open your mouth as wide as you can, whilst you keep your tongue flat. So long as the cotton bud doesn’t touch your tongue you shouldn’t gag. As soon as the tip makes contact with the stone it will stick to the cotton bud.

I went to the Dr with mine, but he wasn’t interested. Said they weren’t doing any harm!

Blanikbalm · 09/05/2018 22:57

I'll give it half an hour and try that. The left thumb trick didn't work for me. I feel ill! I need it out! It seems to be hidden right in the side so tricky to get to.

Goldmonday · 09/05/2018 22:59

This is super gross but I actually use the round end of a hair pin to scrape them out. You would be amazed at how many can be in there at one time! I tend to get them after being ill so that probably is what has caused it for you.

egdehsdrawkcab · 09/05/2018 23:05

Oh god!! Now I want to back and get a hair grip on it! Can't keep my tongue flat!

GRIMNESS!

I would suggest you (gently and hygenically) perservere- when I used to get them my breath in the morning would be gross and I got a bit obsessed with mints because I was convinced it would be smelly throughout the day.

I found I developed more if I’d had a lot of dairy, weirdly.

egdehsdrawkcab · 09/05/2018 23:08

I read they can be caused by taking painkillers that give a dry mouth too - been in strong ones recently for the chest infection and noticed how dry mouth was at night. Godammit.

How long will it take to go on it's own??? Will it ever????

I have to press my tonsils, they wouldn’t stick to a cotton bud unless already falling out. The fist time I had had a recurrent sore throat on one side and could see a white spot when I finally poked my tonsil(quite hard) dozens of tiny pellets poured out. I have never had as many since, just the odd one. Throat has been loads better, I think I had a blockage.

dinosaurkisses · 09/05/2018 23:16

Mine never left on their own. I’ve completely lost my gag reflex (well, it’s very dull) from having to hoke then out for about 3 years.

They form in little crypts of scarring in your tonsils- I had these from recurrent tonsillitis. Thankfully, I got my tonsils out a few years ago which out an end to it, but once I got my first one they redevelop after about a week.

Cough

Cough again

It should come out

poshme · 09/05/2018 23:20

Can you find a friend to help? I got my daughters out with a torch & tweezers.
Don't think I could have as much accuracy in my own mouth.

Gargling?

WeAreGerbil · 12/05/2018 09:57

I had white things on my tonsils, doctors all told me different things, some said tonsil stones, though they couldn't be removed, others said remnants of cysts, others just dead skin (if that's what you call it on tonsils!). I also have no gag reflex anymore from poking around. I had my tonsils out, I'm glad they're gone, though I still have cysts at the back of my throat and no idea why, doctors don't seem to know either but aren't bothered.

egdehsdrawkcab · 12/05/2018 22:21

So I went to the doc (ridiculously handsome btw, ffs).

He said, while I blushed, that he couldn't see anything - could be an ulcer, a scratch, indeed a tonsil stone.

Basically completely useless but ridiculously handsome.

Love a hot locum.
