How do you clip your baby's fingernails?

DS (11 weeks) has the sharpest nails - and now that he's getting increasingly grippy, we're getting scratched to bits! But his hands are so tiny (and he never keeps them still), I'm worried that I'll do him an injury with the baby nail scissors. Do MNers have any other top tips for clipping or filing nails? Do people bite them off??

I used to nibble them too Squonk. I am just too cack handed to be allowed near tiny fingers with a sharp instrument.

bite them when i'm feeding her!

ScaryHairy · 15/05/2007 21:20

I'm a biter. I have to wait until DD falls asleep having her bedtime bottle and then I chomp them off as fast as I can.

I have always used the baby scissors. At times it will be tricky so I would stop until my angel was asleep in her chair. Now, she is 10 months she is vemusees herself by picking up the bits and aiming to eat them!!

I nibble them whilst she is feeding. Getting harder as she gets older and more wriggly though! My sister-in-law is a nurse and warned me about using nail scissors / clippers

  • saying she saw lots of little accidents.

I bought a set that had tiny baby nail clippers in - worked perfectly. Now he is 13 months and doesn't fall asleep on my lap, I do them when he falls asleep in the carseat.

I used to bite them off. I was advised by my HV to do this. Its a much safer way, providing you are gentle and dont rip them off, just nibble. obviously.
