Whooping Cough!

Has anyone had whooping cough as an adult?

I’ve got the most horrendous barking cough. Have had it for two weeks now. Nothing touches it. Thought it was common cold but is getting worse and not better- I sometimes cough till I retch! GP said my chest was clear and I could just be asthmatic and it’s a normal cough which sounds worse. But the inhaler she is giving me is doing absolutely bollocks all. I feel breathless and my heart is always racing. Any ideas?

I had it 2 years ago, it was awful. It took 4 drs visits and 6 weeks to get a diagnosis.
In the end I just used cough linctus, vaporub and soothers so ease the symptoms, but nothing really helped. I had the cough for nearly 5 months Sad

I had it a couple of years ago and it was horrid. Lasted around a month, regularly coughed so much I vomited. Wasn’t much anyone could do unfortunately, just had to wait until it went.

@madamginger I’m desperately hoping I don’t have it but it’s awful! 5 months!!!!

Sorry, was a couple of months, not a month

I Have never had such an awful cough, I was coughing so bad I couldn’t breathe and then I would panic because I felt like I was suffocating. I would also vomit from coughing so hard.

AveEldon · 27/04/2018 21:45

Yep - took 3 months to go. I also coughed so much that I vommed. Grim

I've had it. I got antibiotics but they didn't really help, I think they are more to stop you from being infectious. I actually broke a rib from coughing so much and even now 5 years later I still get a sore chest if I have a cough. It took about 5 weeks for my swab to come back positive. I hope that's not what you've got as you really do just have to ride it out and it's grim.

Google vit c protocol for whooping cough

Pinkmexicanskull · 27/04/2018 22:00

Oh god I am praying this is not what I have but deep down I think I do. It’s utterly horrendous- I was having a manicure/pedicure today and the entire salon just kept staring at me and my uncontrollable coughing. Nothing’s helping, it feels like my lungs are going to explode

My daughter had it last year. She had been vaccinated. We saw 8 Drs & then a paediatrician to diagnose her. She has asthma & they kept saying it was due to her asthma. I kept saying I thought it was whooping cough.
Apparently she had a genetically modified version. She would cough & then couldn’t breathe & then vomit.
She missed 6 weeks of school & 2 weeks of the school hols was still sick. She went back to school for a week then was off another week with a cold.
It is called the 100 day cough. It destroys the tiny hairs in the mucus membranes so your body is susceptible to picking up infections for a long time after, The Dr said I’d you pick up another virus it reignites the whopping cough again. We also found out my daughter was coeliac so woujd never have known otherwise. Last year she caught 9 colds a her immune system was depleted.
Have you had swab tests done? The swab was fine wrong by one Dr so the paediatrician did a test where they suck thr mucus from the back of the nose. It was very traumatic for her.
Even if they diagnose you there is nothing they can do. The antibiotics are best given in the first few weeks & all they do is make you less infectious.
