Insect bites

I react really badly to insect bites. Something bit me when I was walking through our local park about 10 days ago and I still have a really visible red mark just above my ankle.
It always looks fairly innocent at the time but over the next few hours swells right up into a bit of a lump, really red, and also quite painful to touch. I always react like this to bites.

What's a good sort of thing to have in the first aid box to help bites heal up a bit faster? Is there a cream anyone would recommend or do you just have to put up with it till it goes away? The pharmacist just offered an anti-histamine tablwt which I take anyway for hay fever.
