Enlarged Prostrate

My 82 year old DF has an enlarged prostrate and getting recurrent urine infections. He is saying he doesn’t want to go to hospital and have an operation. Does anyone know if there is an alternative to surgery or any advice in general? I think he has been checked for prostrate cancer and that came back clear.

Medication can often help with benign prostate enlargement. Some men will end upncatheterised to avoid the urine infections but most won’t need this. Surgery is usually only considered if other treatments have failed.

I hope this helps, many older men live alongside prostate trouble and do very well.

Thank you Matilda. Have you heard of uro-lift surgery?

has he seen a urologist? Men of his age make up a pretty big chunk of urology operating lists so that shouldn't be the thing that stops him considering surgery if the urologists think it might help. Long term catheter is an option if he really doesn't want surgery. Medications may also be an option, but all meds come with side-effects.

No he hasn't seen a urologist. I will ask him to go and see his doctor and ask him to be referred to one.
