What is wrong with my throat?

I've had an awful sore throat for a couple of weeks now but it is unlike any I've had before. The pain is incredibly localised on one side, and it feels almost more like an injury than a standard throat infection.

I've had a couple of low fevers on and off but not consistently, and generally feel a bit run down.

Has anyone had anything similar? What helped? And do I need to take myself to the gp at some point soon?

I had this a couple of weeks ago, DD has had it too but not as severe. It knocked me off my feet for a week so dose yourself up on cold & flu tabs if you can, I felt like I'd been hit by a truck and had d&v just to top it all off! Get well soon op

Tonsillitis?

nancy75 · 12/04/2018 20:23

Years ago I had an ulcer in my throat, it sounds similar. From memory gargling with salt water helped but I do remember it being really horrible

CockOffPostmanPat · 12/04/2018 20:26

I had a tonsillectomy so not tonsillitis. Should have put that in my op.

Sorry to hear others have had similar. I'll try gargling some salt water and will keep going with the painkillers. If it's not better after the weekend I'll try to get a phone appointment with the gp.

I don't know if its the same thing I've had - mine didn't sound as bad as yours.

We had the traditional end of term cold run through the family. After runny nose and cough I then developed a sore throat. Nose and cough died down but sore throat remained - it was localised on my right hand side and felt like an irritation/injury when I swallowed (but not every swallow). After a couple of days the pain appeared to move towards my right ear. But then the next day (today) all has disappeared. During that time I, due to the joy that is health anxiety, self diagnosed with a variety of head and neck cancers Hmm But hopefully all has righted itself now.

Hopefully yours is similar but more drawn out?

One sided pain isn't going to be an infection usually. Could be a group of ulcers, I've had them before. It'd be worth seeing a dentist I think as they are the mouth specialists. Always worth checking unusual pain or prolonged pain in any situation

My DH had a tonsillectomy and four years later was diagnosed with tonsillitis because the little buggers had grown back!!

Louislovesmud · 12/04/2018 20:40

To second FridayNightFun I had my tonsils removed as a child, they grew back and I only found out when I had another bout of tonsillitis.

CockOffPostmanPat · 12/04/2018 20:43

Shock The fuckers can grow back?!

They really can. Mine decided to grow back and floor me in the middle of my final uni exams.

Best get the GP to have a rummage and see what's going on

FridayNightFun · 12/04/2018 20:47

Yep and he found out the hard way!

Doctor: "you have tonsillitis"
DH: "oh no no doctor, you must be mistaken, I had them removed"
Doctor produces mirror and torch!

I'll see if I can speak to the gp on Monday. They do a phone triage system so hopefully I'll be seen sometime next week!

I agree with rubber johnny (but don't like his name!) I think I'd see the GP first - dentists are for mouths but not so much throats as far as I know.

marshatp · 23/11/2018 15:36

I need to forward your message to ENT surgeons. Some of them just reiterate that "tonsillectomy cures tonsillitis". I guess so. But you can have another sore throat which is just as bad even if you don't have tonsils. Just can't call it tonsillitis - that is not much of a consolation
