Unusually heavy period

Hi,

Anyone know if an unusually heavy period could be something that needs to be looked at. Normally I'm very predictable, heavy-ish for one or two days, but nothing I can't manage. This month has been weird. I'm leaking through a nighttime pad within two hours. I went to the loo once expecting to need to change pads at another time. There was nothing there, but then while on the loo, whoosh, massive clot and huge flooding - thankfully I was one the loo! And I've felt several other larger clots at other times.There's no obvious reason for this happening. I'm not on any hormonal contraceptive, definitely not pregnant. I'm 39. Last gave birth almost three years ago.

Any ideas? Start of pre-menopause or whatever it's called? I feel completely well otherwise.

I would call 111 and see what they say, because it's not usual for you. It could be just your age (mine sound similar, but I am a few years older,) but no one can tell from here.

Whenever I have seen my GP about periods, having an idea of dates and patterns has been helpful, so keep note of what's happening with clots and flow/how often you need to change, also any cramping or whatever else. Sounds like you're doing that anyway. Apparently a large clot is anything over the size of a 50pence piece. Oh, how I laugh at that som

A few have definitely been bigger than a 50p. Definitely unusual for me. I'll see if there's any online GP appointments, and if not, see if I can get some advice from 11. I hope it's not the start of a new pattern!

If it is the start of a new pattern, all is not lost! There are is a scale of options from tranexamic acid or Mirena to more invasive options which can help make it more manageable - and if your GP dismisses it as something you have to live with, then find a more enlightened GP - mine said, "no woman in this day and age should have her life controlled by periods." But first you will need to know if it's a new pattern or something else.
