Throbbing headache on one side

I’ve had a hideous headache since Tuesday and it’s starting to get me down... it’s just on the left side of my head, radiating from the base of my skull. It’s worse when I move my head and is making me feel (but not be) sick. Painkillers help for about two hours then it comes back with a vengeance.

I was hoping it would go away by itself as these things usually do but it’s stiil there today and I can’t see how I’m going to cope with work tomorrow.

Any idea what might be causing it - and what might help?

It makes seem obvious, but did you have any sort of bump to the head before it started?

Have you ever had this before or suffered from migraines previously?

Is your vision affected? Any dizziness?

What painkillers have you been taking?

JollyGiraffe · 08/04/2018 13:55

*might seem obvious I meant to say!

No bump, no dizziness, vision fine.

I do occasionally get migraines but they a) don’t last as long - usually two days max and b) don’t start from the same place

I’ve been taking a combination of paracetamol staggered with ibuprofen

I once had a headache that was like this and it lasted a week -was practically bedridden and don't know how it took me so long to get to the doctors but it turned out I had a throat infection -even though my throat wasnt sore at all, but it was causing the headache so it could be that??

I once slipped and jarred my neck but didn't notice at first. Then I had a headache all week and thought I would crack up. Tablets didn't shift it. I then realised It seemed to be coming from the neck muscles on the left hand side. Try rubbing some anti-inflammatory gel into your neck and shoulders. That's what eventually worked for me.

Headache still there ... tried anti-inflammatory gel which did nothing and was maxed out on codeine by the end of the weekend so went to see my GP this morning. She said it sounded very like a migraine but as it’s unusual for it to have gone on so long she’s sending me for a CT scan to rule out any other cause before starting migraine medication. I just want it to stop ..

Best of luck 💐

When's your CT OP?

Hope all is ok and it's 'just' a migraine (sounds like a bloody horrible one if it is though!)

noitsnotteatimeyet · 11/04/2018 08:11

Had the CT yesterday - at a scarily efficient walk-in clinic at one of the local hospitals - my GP gets the results on Friday. She’s pretty sure that it won’t show anything abnormal but as there are a couple of red flags she wanted to be sure. In the meantime I’m taking a full dose of ibuprofen together with paracetamol. Headache is still there ...

That's lucky they were quick!

Is it still hurting as much as before?

MrsEricBana · 11/04/2018 19:17

Poor you, horrible. I had similar and was migraine but they did CT scan to check too. Hope you're better soon.
