Its 3AM, and as usual I am still up. Seems to be every day now for the last few months. I will go to bed soon but then up at 6AM for work on a weekday.

No drugs or alcohol. Kids grown up (ish) and away from home.
Prescribed steroids for asthma.

Can't get out of the habit but need to or this is going to make me ill (I am always tiered as it is).

Need to get out of the habit. Any tips?

Do you drink tea or coffee? My DH is like you and found he could NOT have caffeine after about 2.00pm or he'd just not sleep.

Some people are more sensitive to it.

Same with heavy meals....we eat our main meal at 5 and he walks the dog at about 9.00pm...comes home and mostly is in bed for 10.30...he's had to work quite hard to find out the best recipe for sleep/.

Tea or diet cola but not after about 8PM. Perhaps I should cut back on that.

Oh definitely! No tea or cola after about 2-3 for sure. It really affects some people.

I can't sleep if I drink tea/coffee after about 5pm!

I'd listen to previous posters ragrding caffeine, if affects me for so long, too!

Same with exercise. Could you do some exercise that tires you out in the day time? Or, an evening walk/jog/up and down the stairs?

I'll second the caffeine thing. I don't have caffeine after lunchtime now.

I only started this a week ago and it's been shockingly helpful sleep-wise.

Michael Mosley has some great tips regards sleep - google him. Some tips I've read:
Cherry juice
10 minutes od meditation before bed
Magnesium spray/epsom salt bath
A teaspoon of honey with a sprinkle of salt before bed
Legs up against a wall for half an hour before bed
Inulin ( a prebiotic) before bed
Best of luck
