Ear infection novice!

3 weeks ago I was on holiday in the Far East and all of a sudden one evening my ear suddenly became blocked and painful. Over the next 18 hours the pain became unbearable so I went to a local, very good pharmacy where I was told I had an ear infection and was prescribed a 5 day course of Amoxicillin, some anti inflammatory pills and painkillers.

The pain disappeared within 24 hours but the horrible blocked sensation remained. I did take great care on the flight home using cotton wool and olive oil and thankfully suffered no additional problems.

2 weeks later and still no further pain but the blocked sensation remained so I made an appointment with our GP but had to see a locum with it being Easter school holidays. She said the infection was still there and prescribed some Otomize drops and told me to take Ibuprofen which I have done religiously. She also asked me to return in 2 weeks to check the infection had gone.

I know I probably sound a real wuss but this blocked sensation - I can't hear well at all from the affected ear - is so uncomfortable and although it is a little better it doesn't seem to have improved at all in the past few days. ☹️

I have never, ever experienced ear problems before and this is starting to seriously worry and depress me as I am now beginning to wonder if it will ever clear completely. Please can someone with knowledge of ear infections enlighten me as to whether this is normal? Nobody has said the ear drum is perforated so am assuming that is ok.

Just bumping for any advice at all!

It is worse again today with the deafness and "Crackling" inside every time I swallow or move my jaw.

Really getting me down. ☹️

When I had deafness following a cold.it was an internal blockage and nothing put in the ear would help - my doctor prescribed steroid nasal drops (whi h get into the inner tubing) and that cleared it very quickly.

I'd go back to the doctors and see what they suggest

I had an ear infection a few weeks ago with deafness and ringing in my ear too. I was told it could take up to 6 weeks for my hearing to return as after the infection goes you then have to wait for the inflammation to go and your eardrum to heal. I had the crackling sensation too and it was horrible, I just wanted it to pop and clear. My hearing came back very gradually, I suddenly realised one day I could hear normally again, but it did take 3-4 weeks.

Thank you so much both of you!

Keepingbees you have certainly lightened my spirits even though I may have to give it another week or so.

Must admit I have considered going back to see my own GP starfish as the locum was very nice but very young. I only saw the locum on Tuesday and didn't want to be a nuisance as she did ask me to return in 2 weeks. I suppose deep down I am just hoping for a quicker solution. ☹️

Hope you feel better soon Smile Do go back if you have symptoms of an infection again but otherwise it's just a waiting game unfortunately. It is horrible though you feel like your heads in a bucket. But you'll get there
