I had a sore throat / cold which led to a cough which I have now had for nearly 6 weeks and I am FED UP. I suffer from awful health anxiety so finding this particularly hard. I get very breathless with my anxiety and then think the breathlessness is my cough so then go round and round in circles worrying.

I am coughing up green stuff but doctor, who I saw this week, said it is definitely viral as she can't hear anything. Is that always the case? I so wanted it to be a chest infection just so I can take something that works!

Has anyone else had a cough like this that goes on and on? I just want it to go now. Any tips hugely appreciated. At this point I just feel like I will have it forever and am so miserable ☹️

I would have thought if you were coughing up green then there is definitely an infection. Can you go to see a different Dr? You might end up with bronchitis or pneumonia. You probably need some string antibiotics.

Strong antibiotics

Thanks diamond. I thought it must be an infection too but the doc said as I didn’t have a temp and she couldn’t hear anything that it must be viral.

I'd go back to the gp I had a cough that lasted ages and survived 3 lots of antibiotics. On my 5th trip to the drs with it they sent me for a chest x-ray which showed up an infection despite my chest having sounded clear.

Oh geez the amateur medics out in force again.

Dr probably right it's viral which antibiotics will do nothing for, I had thought the overuse of antibiotics message was getting through, apparently not.

It's very common for coughs to last 6-8 weeks, possibly longer in people with underlying conditions (eg asthma like myself).

Fluids especially hot drinks but not too milky/creamy, rest, BUT try not to lie down too much so gravity does its job too. Eat well inc plenty of natural mucus thinners like ginger, pineapple and garlic.

Hopefully you'll feel better soon Flowers
