antidepressants to treat PMS

i have suffered really bad PMS since i had ds2 nearly 4 years ago,i get paranoid, depressed, irritable, bloated(usually put on about 7lb),spotty,have cravings for chocolate etc.i had a baby nearly 9 weeks ago and i didnt feel too bad untill this week when i started suffering all of the above to an extreme.i was wondering if i had PND,but i'm now convinced af is on its way and i actually have PMT.

whenever i saw my doctor about it in the past, she would just say i was depressed and never listened to me when i explained that i only felt that way from when i ovulated to when af began and as soon as i started bleeding i felt fine.

i have been on prozac since week 12 of my pregnancy(i had AND),but it obviously isnt doing me any good now.

i was wondering if anybody has experience of ad's to specifically treat PMS?and if so,which ones are the mose effective?

How about trying 'Magnesium OK' or starflower oil or evening primrose oil capsules. They're all supposed to be good for balancing hormones and a friend used Magnesium OK when she started feeling violent towards her DH before her af! They worked for her and she didn't need ADs

i tried evening primrose before and it didnt do any good, but i have been reading about magnesium so i think i will give it a try, thanks for your reply

5htp. A natural antidepressent that works!

lucyellensmum · 09/05/2007 15:30

ifonlyhe would , thats got to be a good one, that is a precursor to seretonin, a happy hormone as it were and the best bit, its present at a high level in, get this, CHOCOLATE

Dica, you should ask your doc about progesterone pesseries. My Doc recommended them to me, i cant remember why i never got round to using them, but now have mirena coil so cant have them, but she said to me that women have told her that they have changed their lives, its not addictive and isnt classed as an anti depressant either.

PMT is shite isnt it. I could kill sometimes.

divastrop · 09/05/2007 16:28

synthetic progesterone has an adverse effect on me,so i wouldnt like to try them.

i didnt realise you could still get that 5htp,i was looking for it in holland and barrett the other week and couldnt see it.

I use it lucyellensmum and I can tell you it is great! Its amazing the change it has made in me. Not only am I no longer depressed on a daily basis but I get no PMT whatsoever. And..... its much less fattening than chocolate although not as tasty!

Ifonlyhewould · 09/05/2007 16:47

Holland and Barrett don't do it. I get mine from Healthspan cos it's cheaper

Ifonlyhewould · 09/05/2007 16:48

Thats online by the way. Healthy Direct do it too but its more expensive.

NotanOtter · 09/05/2007 16:49

sertraline is mant to be fab and certainly i found when on it that it totally banished pms...it was a JOY

divastrop · 09/05/2007 17:03

i dont think i can take 5htp while im on prozac can i?my gp wants me to carry on with the prozac but i was on it for AND,and it really helped with that, but what im experiencing atm is totally different and i want to see a different doctor and see if theres something better i can take now im no longer pregnant.

OP posts:
divastrop · 09/05/2007 17:05

can sertraline cause weight gain?

OP posts:
Ifonlyhewould · 09/05/2007 17:09

No, you can't take it with prozac. Does the prozac not help the pmt? Stupid question! Obviuosly not or you wouldnt be posting on here

Have you tried altering your diet. Thats known to work. The healthier you eat the better you feel

divastrop · 09/05/2007 20:36

i tried altering diet befor i was preg with dd2,i tried so many things and nothing made a noticeable difference to the psychological symptoms.the prozac worked when i was at my worst with ante-natal depression, but its not helping anymore.

by far the worst symptom is paranoia,i can be convinced of things that are simply not true, and it affects every part of my life.
