Am having c-section and wondering if I should be sterilized at the same time?

I am 42 and we definitely don't want anymore children so the op is definitely an option.

My questions are:

If you did this were you happy with the outcome, ie no post-op side effects and no pregnancy?

I read there is a chance of an ectopic pregnancy, how true is this?

Can it change your cycle and the amount of blood you lose per month?

I would like to hear good and negative stories please!

Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine was sterilized after her second child was born, she was of a similar age to you. Unfortunatly she went on to develop really bad uterine problems, resulting in having to have a full hysterectomy (sp?)

Sorry meant to add, she also had it done after her C section

Hi Chickpea, my doctor wanted me to be sterilised while he was delivering my third by section but even though I was sure that he would be my last, there's just always the chance you might change your mind. Lots of people at the time said to me, what if soemthing happens to the baby a fe wmonths down the line etc - trying to be realistic rather than dramatic I think. in the end I decided not to and a year after he was born my dh had the snip - never regretted it.

My doc indicated that he prefers not to sterilize at the same time as csection as he said he found it had a higher rate of failure than as a stand alone op. not sure if this is true, but Dh stepped up to the line and said he would get done as i had been through enough! The consultant preference was to call back 6 mths after delivery and get it sorted then.

hi ... i was sterilized after my 4 th baby and during a c-section .....
was told before hand there is a higher failure rate if it is done during c-section but didnt want all the hassle of having to go back into hospital three months later to get it done .
have to say everything has been fine .. it was three years ago this june and up to now havent had any problems....
have found my cycle isnt as regular but that is probably because i am not using the pill anymore ....maybe a bit heavier but nothing excessive ...
we had both decided we didnt want anymore children and just seemed easier to get it done then .

I had it done too at the same time as my last c-sec. 2 1/2 yrs ago.
No problems at all. In the first couple of days after i had a build up of wind that was unconfortable. Periods have become a lot more regular, but the 2nd day of my period was very heavy and couldn't plan to do anything on that day but sit by a toilet.Never had that before the sterilisation..but it was worst the year after..and not as bad now.

I heard this is more of a failure rate having it done with c-sec...but i have been pregnant free ever since. (i secretly hope that one little egg will sneak through...lol)

I had the clips not the cutting and tieing one.

xx

I don't know how accurate this is but my eldest sister was sterialised at the same time as a c-section and 17 years later she still has a very large stomach. Her GP said it is quite common for the abdomen to stay this size if you are sterialised just after giving birth. I am not sure if he was just fobbing her off but it might be worth looking into.

I'm afraid I have absolutely no experience to relate to your post but my gut instinct is that it's a much bigger deal than your dh/partner having the snip. Is that an option?

Blandmum · 10/05/2007 07:30

I had this done.

I am delighted with the outcome, as I didn't want to ever be PG again, and didn't want the continued hassle of contraception that I had to think about.

I had my tubes removed not clippedm, so no chance of an ectopic.

Periods are horrid, but they were before the op.

There is a slightly higher chance of the sterilisation failing if you have it done immediatly after a section....this is, I think the reason why they took out my tubes.

I have no regrets, but as with all types of sterilisation you have to be very sure that you never want another child in any circumstances.

I was 37 whan I had it done btw.
