septoplasty has changed the shape of my nose

Two weeks ago I had a septplasty operation. Now the swelling has subsided the shape of nose has changed. There is a prominent bump where the cartlilage has dropped away from the bone. Has anyone had this happen to them? What can I do. I am in tears at the moment, I know it sounds really vain but my nose looks really awful. Is this permanent?

Who did the surgery? When is your follow up appt.? I would call the sec. and say that you need to talk to hte consultant on the phone at least.. and arrange a "soon" appt. If it's not happening, ask your GP to do it.
It maybe that it's just what happens, but if so they should have prepared you that further work might be required. If you want a second op. at any time, let me know. I can give you the name of the best (NHS) nose guy!

There is no follow up scheduled. They wanted me to go to the practice nurse to get the stitches out and that's it. I am really disappointed. I still can't breathe out of the left nostril which is why I had the op in the first place. Thanks Jackaroo

My dad had the op about a yr ago, it didn't work and is still unable to breathe out of one nostril. but as far as I can tell the shape of his nose hasn't changed.

The point is, though, that this is not what is expected. Fine to go to the practice nurse if all that needs to happen is stitches out, but if it's visibly changed the outer shape of your nose that's a whole new problem. You need a follow-up if it's not turned out right. You could always get your GP to send you to another ENT consultant, if you're worried about seeing the same guy again... but it might take a while. Where did you have it done?

Jackaroo · 09/05/2007 09:21

PS I forgot to say, it can take much more than 2 weeks for the swelling to subside enough for it to make a difference to breathing, so I wouldn't worry about that just yet. give it another couple of weeks at least......
PPS I'm thinking more about your change of nose shape. If it truly has (and doesn't change back over time, don't know how bad it is iyswim) then this is a mistake and they must take steps to repair. If you get nowhere with the GP etc., try PALS

hi - I've had septoplasty and rhinoplasty for a severely broken nose and yes, the shape of my nose changed quite dramatically. I won't tell you the whole story because it's quite tedious (unless you're interested )!

You need to go back and speak to the ENT (and keep an eye on it because maybe it is swelling and will go down).

What I learnt from my experience is that the quality of ENT in surgery varies IMMENSELY. If you get no further with your ENT, I would INSIST on a referral to another ENT, in a different hospital, to give you a second opinion. (I actually wish I'd done that myself).

I had the op at Cromer hospital day procedure unit. I only saw a nurse for the pre-assessment to make sure I was fit enough for a general. I saw a consultant at Norwich ENT who explained what they would do. I only saw the Cromer consultant and surgeon two hours before the op. It was only then that they told me that they were going to do a more radical procedure. Perhaps I should have said no then. But they spring this news on you two hours before and you do feel rather captive.Looking at my left profile the nose looks squashed rather like a boxers and I have now a prominent bump (which is not swelling) where before the nose was completely straight. I don't know if it is and ENT job now or rather aesthetic. I shall contact the consultant and ask what has happened. Thanks for your advice and comments. It has really helped.
