How di I stop dd1 scratching her excema till it bleeds???

She has always had excema but have managed to control it with oilatum etc but now its just not getting any better as she keeps scratching it till it bleeds. She also gets really bad nappy rash at the times when her excema flares up really badly so is it all linked/to do with teething or is it just coincidence?

How old is she?

Keeping her nails short is the best (and most difficult to manage imo!) thing to do: cut them, then use an emery board. Can you bathe her twice a day? Bicarb in the bath is soothing. Eczema most itchy when it's hot, so keep her a wee bit cooler than usual if it's flared up. Can you bandage the bits she scratches, to stop her getting at them? You could use steroid cream (get from dr, not over-the-counter) for when it flares up, but it's not good for long term use. Non bio powder, no fabric conditioner, extra rinse cycle, etc. (sorry, you prob already know those!) Distraction might work - not so good if she's scratching in her sleep though....!

Sounds like all three are linked, imo. poor girl!

I am not sure about the teetching as my dd didn't get until she was 2.5, however it is likley to become infected if she keeps scratching. I suggest you take her to the GP for a stronger cream for expecailly bad flare-ups and possibily an antistamin (sp?) for the scraching.

i found ds1 scratches his more of a night, so i give piriton before bed when its bad... and if i see him itching wack on aqueous cream to try and cool the area!

She is 16mths and the worst bits are behind her knees and at the tops of her legs. I have tried to keep them covered with clothes but with the nappy rash am having to let her go nappyless for bursts to let some air get at it.Also keeping her nails short as possible.

nemo eurax worked wonders to stop my DD scratching her excema. It also helsp for chicken pox FWIW.

Available on the shelf but not advised under 3 yrs, doc would prob prescribe it for you tho.

I read about special pyjamas with some sort of balm in. I think I have thrown the magazine away but I will go and root through the bin.

have been a loyal customer for many years lucy. they saved my sanity, even though dd1 could escape from their almostr houdini-proof ones due to her rather good double jointedness. even with the button tapes in she escaped.

BTW wanted to ask did you find certain brands of cloth could make the excema/nappy rash worse?

Having not read the whole thread - can I ask where the excema is?

dd1 wasnt in cloth.

with dd3 the cuffs on the ME wrpas were an irritant for a while.

get her some different creams Nemo. She may need a steroid cream if she is scratching that badly.

I scratch my eczema till it bleeds and I know when I do that, it's time for more powerful creams or a trip to the GP .

Her excema is everywhere apart from her face but at the moment is particularly bad behind her knees and at the tops of her legs.

I second the trip to GP, mine was very helpful, and I put it off too long. dd2 got an infection on her wrist in the end, which was unecessary.

I think a trip to the GP is worthwhile. My GP and bil (also a GP) have both said it is a matter of finding the right creams which can just be trial and error. My dd has had various emmolient and steriod creams and we seem to have a combination of the two that mean we can usually keep on top of it.
