Potty training with Hirshsprungs Disease

We adopted a boy about a year ago when he was 18 months old. All healthy and happy apart from the Hirshsprungs he was born with which was operated on within 2 days of birth. All going fine so far, apart from constipation every 2-3 weeks. We give him Lactulose and Senecot when this happens which usually releases it after a day or so. He's 2 years and three months old now and approaching potty training, and we're not sure what to expect - does anyone have experience? The anxiety in our minds is - how will he be able to progress unless he can control his own movements? Is there anything we can do in the run up to help, etc?
