Has anyone else had any experience of kidney stones?

Hi, I've had kidney stones since dd1 (7.5) was born. I had various courses of lithotripsy which always shattered the stone, but left a little bit. A few months would go by and then the little bit got bigger and sure enough the pain would be back. In the end about two years ago I had an op to remove the stone. Apart from a small niggle about 8 months ago all has been fine until yesterday. It started with a dull ache and has been getting worse and worse. I've got some voltarol, which I'm taking, but it's not doing much.

I wondered if anyone else has ever suffered with them and if there was anything that they tried that helped either relief for the pain or got rid of them. I have heard of some brasilian herb that supposedly gets rid, but I haven't tried it and don't know anyone else with the problem.

Obviously, I'll go to the gp on Tues, just wondered if anyone had any advice???

I have had them twice, both in pregnancy, the most painful thing i have been through bar childbirth.

I had a jj stent fitted to open up the ureta (not uretha) which allowed the stones to pass along without it contracting and causing the pain. that said the stent in itself was not nice, it hooked inside the bladder and made me feel like I needed a wee the whole time.

I had a stent for a week after the op I had and it was almost as bad as the 'normal' pain. I couldn't function at all, so wouldn't want that again. Did anything else work/help?

mine passed forunately, have you tried cutting back on calcium? i've heard that can help?

can you not go straight to your consultant instead of GP?

I don't think I eat especially high amounts of calcium and I hate the taste of milk. Unfortunately I lived in London when I had the stones before and was seen at Guys, now I'm too far away and would have to start all over again with a new hosp.

surely though the pain will get so bad that the hospital will be the only place to go?

I will if it gets bad, mine have a habit of being a dull ache that you can just about deal with. The children are at my Mum's so only me and dh, if it was a weekday I'd be able to function, but with difficulty. If it gets worse I'll go to hosp.

Hi - I just read your message and can fully sympathise as I've had K.S. twice. I saw a Chinese herbal doctor (2 different ones) in both cases. The last one prescribed a tea that I drank 3 times a day. He also told me to 'jump' to help dislodge the stone - he said sitting/lying down wouldn't help. Following his advice, after about 2 days I began to feel the stone move down the tube until I passed it - quite painful but a wonderful feeling of having beaten it without drugs or surgery. Not much help to you on a Sunday/holiday Monday I'm afraid but may be an option to consider in the future? For pain relief today perhaps try a warm compress over the affected area and keep drinking fluids (but not caffeine or alcohol).

ouch! yes i collapsed with these about 5 years ago. had them a few times since. luckily up to now i have always been able to pass them with some help of voltarol and an injection to break them down.
