Anyone taken steroid inhalrs during pregnancy?

I had flu 7 weeks ago and still have a really irritating cough and feel a bit out of breath. I have been using my ventoin inhaler but it's not making any difference. Been to the Dr's this afternoon and got the usual can't give you anything etc (have other probs as well which I can't have meds for) but then Dr decided they could give me a mild steroid inhaler to see if that helps the cough. She said there's no known problems in pregnancy from it but there's always a risk when you take meds in pregnancy. Don't know if I should see how I get on or to get the flippin inhaler and start using it. It's Beclometasone 100micrograms.
Has anyone had steroids during pregnancy? I'm nearly 26 weeks. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

I have two inhalers I have to use twice a day and I used them all through my pg's. Take them, they will make you feel better.

lulumama · 04/05/2007 17:15

i might be wrong, but i though inhalers were ok, because the medication is confined to your lungs, not going into your bloodstream, and therefore into the baby

am happy to be corrected if that is not the case

mears · 04/05/2007 17:21

Yes your inhaler is OK to use. There are very few things that you cannot have medication for at this stage of pregnancy.

geekgrrl · 04/05/2007 17:22

I used mine and have been told the same as lulumama

lovelybird · 04/05/2007 17:24

Thank so much, I'll get them tomorrow. Feel better now, thanks everyone

Sorry I'm late to this thread, but what Ruby said is correct. I take becotide inhaler regularly, even when I was pregnant, and I also had to take a course of prednisolone when preganant with DS1, for the reason Ruby said. The GP told me I was not getting enough oxygen into my lungs, and therefore neither was baby.

Yes, I was prescribed one at 20/21 weeks.

I was also on steroid tablets and anti-biotics for a couple of weeks following a bad chest infection/asthma attack (ambulance job). Your health is just as important.

Saltire - same here

gothicmama · 04/05/2007 17:30

used mine all the way through got told to reduce/ try not to use ventiolin in later prg as it relaxes muscles

I suffer with severe asthma, and am on quite substantial amounts of steroids to control it.

Am 19 weeks pg with no. 2 - when I asked about whether it was safe to take inhalers when pg with no 1, GP reminded me that asthma could kill me - which would not help get a healthy baby out!

They're fine to take. The reason they put all the scarey warnings on the patient leaflets is that it's unethical to do drugs testing on pregnant women, so there are very few drugs that have been 'proven' to be safe ...

Take them, and don't worry about it.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

In fact, when I was 38 weeks pg with DS2 I developed a chest infection. By this point we had moved down south and the GP there wouldn't give me anything, not antibiotics or steroids. i found labour very difficult because I couldn't breathe properly, I'm sure that's why I found DS2's birth so hard,. Anyway I ended up having to stay in for a week being nebulised every four hours.
Not saying that will happen to you, it's another side of not taking the meds

Thank so much everyone, I've got much more sense from MN than the dr!
