More questions about chicken pox

Ds came out in spots yesterday and it is definately chicken pox (dr diagnosed). He had a very mild case as a baby.

My questions

He has a pox on the thumb that he sucks, will he definatedly therefore get them in his mouth and is there anything I can put on it that is safe for him to put in his mouth (am thinking calamine wouldn't be ok)

Also what was the worst day for your child, we are only on day 2 and although grizzly and grumpy he doesn't seem itchy or hot. will it get worse, last time was so mild, only 12 spots crusted and gone within a week.

please please please, am concerned about thumb mostly as not sure how it is ever going to heal with him sucking it. Could I put nipple cream on it (it is safe for babes to suck on after all and can be put on open wounds on nipple.

I would leave it (his thumb). Don't put anything on it and see what happens.

I wouldn't put a plaster on it in case he swallowed it. How about ringing surgery and asking to speak to practice nurse for advice, if you don't get any answers on here? Its horrible isn't it. I think you can buy calamine CREAM rather than liquid which will help his itching (when it starts) as it stays on the spots for longer.

Keep him hydrated and give calpol if he gets hot.

How old is he? Does he have a dummy for bed? Maybe it would be better than h is sore thumb?>!

i cant remember which days were worse.but ds2 had it mildly twice so ive been told he may have it again.dd and ds1 had it properly

Not fair to get it twice. Poor thing. I have no idea about the thumb thing - maybe you could call healthline.

thanks is night time here, on my own, dh away all week and ds very unsettled tonight. More worried about when the blister on his thumb bursts (invisiging horrible welts in his mouth from sucking on pussy thumb, source of comfort being raw and sore (thumb) and generally having really sad grumpy ds

Ah, found it!

I wouldn't worry too much about his thumb, it gives him comfort and I don't think sucking it will prevent it healing. My girls had spots in the folds of their front bottoms and they still healed as the pox left their systems.

I can't be sure, but I wouldn't imagine sucking his thumb will necessarily spread the pox into his mouth.

Our worst day was probably 3 days after spots appeared. Each of my children had it in succession and took it worse than the one before.

You might just be lucky in that he doesn't get too grumbly or itchy or hot. A child of a friend of mine had it twice and neither time was too uncomfortable.

If he does, use everything. I found Piriton (the traditional one that says it helps the pox, Piriteze doesn't actually say chicken pox on the label.....) helped a bit and the cream that I found really good is called Aqueous Calamine. Its easy to massage in, seems to keep the skin cooler for longer than with dab-on calamine and the massage seemed to help the itch. Don't buy Boots version, it is in a tiny tube and hard to rub in. Aqueous Calamine came in a tub and had the 'Care' branding on it, you know the big plus sign on the packaging? Cheap too.

thanks fg will look to see if those are available here, neighbours have given us pinetarsal solution and suggested cornpowder in his bath.

Cool bath with oats? Someone has recommended that to me.

Its hard on your own at night when you just want someone to share it all with (I understand that very much). Just keep focussed on next week, it will be much easier then, this is a blip.

I hope you are both sleeping now.......curl up with him and stay there. They're only young once as my granny would say. I hope tomorrow brings comfort. I'll try to check in and see how he is.

poor lad has had a rough nite and is miserable today. refuses to have a bath or to let me put anything on the spots which are definately itchy today.

I have no advice I'm afraid, but wanted to send some sympathy! no signs of it in my 2 yet, have been watching them like a hawk though just in case.
really hope the worst is over soon and he starts getting back to normal
