I used to have perfect bowels before having DC. DH used to call me 'teflon bowels' because I was a once per day, no issues girl, and he has a tendency to constipation.

I started having some mucous in my stools about 2 years ago, and when I told the GP, she said 'Oh that sounds like IBS(C)'. Nothing more was said.

It's got gradually worse over the last year or so, so that mucous was visible around stools, and then sometimes in the toilet pan. I sometimes passed just mucous. Sometimes orange, pale brown, light brown, green, or off-white with blood mixed throughout it. When I pass stools there is sometimes visible blood streaked through it. I don't think it's 'on' it, because it doesn't discolour the water. I sometimes have a slight tear if I pass a large stool, and that is clearly different, because there will be fresh blood on the toilet paper and some blood drops into the pan.

It's significantly worsened over the last month, to the point that I've developed a degree of urgency, and increased number of motions in the day. Several will be just liquid/mucous and gas. Tonight, I had a motion of light brown liquid, two small solid stools, then 30 minutes later, a motion of off-white mucous with blood mixed throughout it.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I do take Naproxen about 2-3 times per week (prescribed), but also take omeprazole (prescribed) as gut cover. If I go to the GP, is it best to take a sample with me, rather than wait for them to ask for one? I presume they'll need one.

Hi sorry did you find anything out? I have mucous in my stools usually when. Constipated, doctor suspects ibs and doing a stool sample.

Shauna2866 · 02/09/2022 09:50

Hi what was the out come on this ?
I have had brown bloody mucus constipation lose bowels with blood stomach cramps Lower back ache urgency to go the toilet
every morning I wake up I Have bad cramps

i done a calprotectin stool test and it came back at 157 so moderately raised my GP said but my symptoms disappeared for 2 months and now they started again
just done another stool test waiting on my results done them a week ago nothing back yet but I know it can take a while to come I’ve spoke to gastro team at the hospital I can’t have colonoscopy yet until my baby is born and that’s Jan via c section so suppose I’ll have to live in the not known for a long time I’m worried I’ve been reading up and now alls I do is worry

hope your feeling better and got to the bottom of what’s been happening xx

I wonder also I get orangey mucus in my stool and mainly constipated I take ibuprofen for migraines a lot 🙈 I did have a fit test for blood which was fine, then I had normal stool test and said mild inflammation likely to be ibs and that was it

Shauna2866 · 29/10/2022 20:24

@Anxiousmummy1187 what was your calprotectin levels at when you had the test ??
it’s weird now it’s gone again now but very few months it just comes back I’ll be having this colonoscopy once I’ve had my baby in January x

Anxiousmummy1187 · 29/10/2022 21:01

They didn’t actually tell me they just said showed some mild inflammation likely due to ibs and that was literally it. I’m guessing that’s what doctors wrote on notes as it was receptionist who rang me to give me nothing further needed my diet is pretty poor and I have acid reflux to which apparently gives you orange mucus

Shauna2866 · 30/10/2022 18:07

@Anxiousmummy1187 oh really I would ask them what calprotectin levels were my GP said you don’t get elevated calpro levels with ibs as I was hoping that’s what I have but all my symptoms are pointing towards chrons / ulcerative colitis
never had issues ever before all started after having my second c section in January!

Anxiousmummy1187 · 30/10/2022 18:45

I am not sure I’m guessing that’s what it is as I googled and it said on main page for cal protectin ibs but also said ibd and others but that was on list. My friend had really high and she’s had all kinds of scans and she just had ibs

Shauna2866 · 30/10/2022 20:15

Not sure then just that when you get high calprotectin levels it’s because there is inflammation in the bowels and ibs doesn’t cause any inflammation only chrons or UC does
but I’m not jus what my GP has said to me

Hi @louglehope you’re doing ok. I know it’s been a while but I’m going through the exact symptoms as you. I’ve been GP and given a stool sample and they’ve taken bloods. No results yet but he hasn’t referred me either. I’m 33 and have never had these issues before so I’d hoped because of mucus and blood in stools he would have. What was the outcome of your further tests? Hope all ok!

Lougle · 05/12/2025 21:21

@bigheartlittleheart I was diagnosed with proctitis. I took meds for a while but I went into remission and so I've come off them.

How are you now? Did you get any answers? @bigheartlittleheart

bigheartlittleheart · 04/04/2026 22:04

@Mrsworried1hi! So sorry for the late reply. So basically, all good news so far. I had a colonoscopy which came back clear, I had some piles but honestly these only appeared because of the bowel prep and how much I had to use the toilet. They haven’t bothered me before. I am going to have a gastroscopy in a few weeks, although this is just a precaution whilst under the care of gastroenterology and my consultant doesn’t expect to find any issues. I am still having the same symptoms sometimes (mucus-y poops but no more blood) so consultant isn’t in the slightest concerned. I guess I may have just had some inflammation that has passed now.

Well that’s good news! My gp does not seem to think I need a colonoscopy as I only had blood when I had diarrhoea, so they put it down to a gastric bug. Still worried though x
