Tonsillitis or thrush?

Dd (16yo) started with bad sore throat yesterday, hurts to swallow and white spots on tonsils. Generally feels a bit undergone weather.

So I thought tonsiitis of some description.

She’s stayed off school today. Rang me at work at lunch saying she felt worse and her tongue was coated in creamy/yellow crap. I told her to go to the chemists which she did and get a thrush tablet. Two chemists there and they couldn’t decide if it was thrush or tonsillitis so only sold her painkillers....of which I have a house full.

I’ve been and got a thrush tablet and told her to take it....figured if it’s not thrush it just won’t work. But does thrush give you a sore throat? Or can tonsillitis give you crap on your tongue?

I would get her to the docs,I know the school I work at has had Scarlet Fever going round, which starts off like this, then the coating on tongue comes off leaving with a red tongue. Also you get a rash which is quite rough like sandpaper. If it is then she,ll need antibiotics.x

Just checked her over and no rash. She reckons she had spots on her chest earlier but there’s nothing there now. This is her tongue. Couldn’t get her in at the GP today, can try again tomorrow.

She’s meant to be going on her geography field trip on Weds and I rang school up and they say they’ll have to contact the exam board as it’s an essential part of her A level and they’ve never had anyone too ill to go before. So she’s stressing.

Oh no,bad timing! Hopefully you can get in to see GP tomorrow,or maybe a walk in centre if you have one not too far.x

MrsJoshDun · 26/02/2018 18:04

Thanks. No walk in centre within 45 miles. Guess it will have to be a&e if I can’t get her in tomorrow. Which I know is ridiculous but what else can you do?

That does look like thrush. Not sure one tablet will do the trick.

My gran could get this on occasion as she got older - iirc corsodyl mouthwash was recommended.

MrsJoshDun · 26/02/2018 18:44

Thanks, will get some mouth wash, can’t do any harm.

I've just recovered from flu, and my first symptoms was a very sore tongue that originally looked like your DD's, it then cracked and was so painful, and my lips cracked too. Then a sore throat, cough and all the other grim flu symptoms (first time I've ever had it) does she feel well in herself apart from that? I'd really avoid A&E if possible.
