Bladder Infection or Kindey Infection?

kid · 01/08/2004 20:17

I had a bladder infection on Friday and the Dr gave me 3 days worth of antibiotics, I will be taking my last one tonight. The Dr said that if it got any worse over the weekend I have to go to the hospital as it could develop into a kidney infection. I have never had a kidney infection before so I'm not sure on the symptoms but I have a cramp like feeling in my lower back and it aches. I took some strong painkillers this afternoon and they did the trick but now the pain is back. I really don't want to go to the hospital unless it is absolutely neccessary!

I had a kidney stone - symptoms were pain when weeing (like cystitus - infact thats what I thought I had...) By the end I had pain in the lower back and was in total agony. A friend had cystitus that she left too long and it worked its way into her kidney - similar symptons....I'd get it checked personally....

i would phone up NHS direct now and mention your symptoms - i have no medical qualifications whatsoever but I think that lower back pains may be a sign of a kidney infection, so you should get it checked out. Hope you feel better soon, and that the backache is purely coincidental.

kid · 02/08/2004 11:18

I didn't phone NHS direct last night as I felt better after taking tablets. I woke up feeling fine this morning but as the day as gone on I'm feeling worse. I now have a temperature of 39.6, am shivering and feel sick. The doctor is phoning me backl between 12:30 and 2pm, so I will speak to them then, the problem I have at the moment is I've got my 2 nephews here as well as DD and DS so I don't fancy dragging them out with me. My sister should be back in half an hour or so.

Kid, you poor thing, I know exactly how you're feeling and it definately sounds like pyelonephritis. I had this 2wks ago.
Rest assured with some fantastic antibiotics and LOTS of water you will feel better in about 48hrs.
Big hugs ((( )))

kid · 02/08/2004 14:52

Thanks for your relies. I spoke to the Dr and she can see me at 4:30 today so I'll be going then. I'm sure it will be a stressful visit as DD (5) and DS (2) have to come with me

kid - hope you are doing OK. let us know how you got on as soon as you feel up to it

kid · 03/08/2004 14:15

Hi mummytosteven, I'm still feeling pretty bad. Still got temp of 39.7 and shivering on and off. Dr gave me more antibiotics for 4x 7 days, I can't wait for them to kick in. If no improvement by Thursday, the Dr will phone the lab to get the results. She said the pain in my back is because it has reached my kidney but there is no need to worry as adults kidney's are mature so can fight infection with no long term damage. Is it normal to have a sharp pain in side and major thumping headache with it though?

tbh i don't know kid - i know that a kidney infection can make people feel pretty damn awful. could you call NHS Direct and ask them, or get your docs to do a home visit. it's not on expecting you to drag yourself out to see them when you are this poorly. fingers crossed that the tabs kick in soon

Well I have felt like death since Saturday! I am beggining to feel a bit better today and actually feel up to venturing out of the house! I am wondering if the headache (that I have had since Monday) is a side effect to the antibiotics. I'll do a search on them and see.

I did a search and headahces are a side effect, along with naseau and dizziness which I have also been experiencing.

I had a kidney infection following on from cystitis on returning from my honeymoon (what a cliche) - and was in bed with a raging fever (sheets soaked and running out of nightclothes) for a week. I had lower backache before the fever hit and have never been so poorly.

mummytosteven · 04/08/2004 22:17

how are you doing kid? feeling any better?

kid · 05/08/2004 08:44

Seem to have bounced back to health to this morning! I still have a sharp pain in my side if I take a deep breath, so I just won't do that!
I still had a temperature last night of 40.1 but feel fine today and I haven't taken any painkillers. I just noticed last night that the pharmacist gave me 52 antibiotics instead of 28! I will go back to the chemist today to let them know and give them the extra ones back. I have no intention of ever having another kidney infection!
All DH says to me is "If you think you are ill, then you will feel ill!" He has never had a kidney infection BTW

Hello,

I am 28 weeks pregnant and suffering with very bad back pain.

I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice.

Is there anything that I can do to ease back pain?

I have never suffered with it before and do not know what is causing it. I have tryed sleeping in different positions and have taken a pillow to work with me today.

earlygirl · 25/08/2004 16:03

silversophie go and see a back person i had severe back pain at the end of my last pg(8 mths)-i was totally distraught for about a week till i went to se a chiropractor who was reccommended by a friend
it turned out it was caused by an imbalanced pelvis(out of line) which is common in pg and can initially caused by carring shopping on one side
anyway first visit she didnt seem to do much(swung my legs about on a special bed) and i was a bit skeptical until a few days later when i heard my spine click as i was pulling and heaving myself out of bed!!
much to my suprise my back had got better(not worse as i first thought when i heard it crack!)
i continued to visit her and by the end of my pg id forrgotton bout my bad back!!

earlygirl · 25/08/2004 16:15
