I have this problem since last 7 years of recurrent UTI( Urinary tract infection ) after intercourse .Has anyone faced this or its quite common !

This is reasonably common. It helps to drink masses and ALWAYS pee after sex. Ideally pee before hand as well. Wipe from front to back after loo. Make sure plenty of lubrication when did.
Pop along to GP if the above measures aren't the answer. Depending on whole story you might need examination and/or investigation.
Many women take antibiotics in various regimes to prevent this.

I have a have Nitrofurantoin on repeat prescription and take one after intercourse. (A course of 30 takes me months to get through !)
The constant infections were depressing and embarrassing.

Nitrofuratoniin after intercourse here too.

I was taking it daily until I realised it was sex related - however clean and careful we were.

Current hardly ever needed :( At one point though I did wonder if I and sex twice in a day if I should take it twice!!

It's called honeymoon cystitis and may or may not bacterial in nature, can be purely an irritation of the urethra because of the mechanics of inter course.

So, while drinking plenty before and after sex, and emptying your bladder before and after sex may all help, a change of position often makes the biggest difference.

Yup. Me too.
In fact I've only ever had UTIs after sex.
I pee before and straight after sex.
One prophylactic dose of antibiotic within 1 hr of sex.
Also, don't use soap to wash your nether regions...it upsets the natural PH balance of that area which makes it more susceptible to bacterial infection. Use something like Dermol instead.
And I use plenty of extra lube too.
It's a total pain having this problem and has made me pretty scared of sex at times!

I had this problem. Countless UTIs, (especially after sex) including ones where I used to pass blood clots. In the end I had day surgery to stretch my tubes. Haven't had a single UTI since. Best decision I ever made.

Now I've woke up I can remember the name of the op...uthethral dilatation. It was 7 years ago and totally cured me.

Had this for ten years. So depressing, and certainly killed the flames of desire, knowing I would be suffering the next day. They sell an amazing pill OTC in the States, can't get it here for some reason. It's called AZO, you can get it on Amazon

Totally fixed my problem. Completely stops the irritation, but it does turn your pee bright yellow! You can take them daily with no probs, I don't even need to any more.

It is almost certainly bacterial and caused by E. coli from the bowel which is pushed up into the urethra during sex. E. coli
Is the cause of 80% of bladder infections. If you want to be sure this is what’s causing it, get a culture done through the GP - not just a dip stick, get them to send it to a lab. Then you will know for sure.

The good news is that because you’re effectively causing it yourself, you can also stop it yourself.

The Angela Kilmartin books are absolutely amazing and totally transformed my UTI infections. Buy them today (there is one specifically on sexual cystitis) and start reading - you need to understand exactly what is happening to cause the infections and what you can do to stop them.

You can’t take any short cuts with your hygiene if you want to resolve this thing. The Kilmartin books have a very specific bottle washing technique involving soap and warm water that anyone prone to infections should be doing basically every time you poo! Your partner also needs a good wash, with soap, before sex.

These infections are debilitating but there is lots of hope I promise! Get the books, they will turn this around for you (provided you do exactly what she says).

Anyone still about on this thread? I've ordered the Angela kilmartin book. I've been on preventative antibiotics after sex for years and over last couple of months I've been getting infections despite them. First trimethoprim stopped working, then nitrofuratoin and now kefalexin seems to have let me down. I only get them after sex. I'm ringing the GP tomorrow. The odd thing is the symptoms are much milder than they used to be, especially if I use d mannose and drink lots of water. It doesn't fully go though unless I have antibiotics. God knows which one they'll give me now though. I'm scared of antibiotic resistance.

@PerfectlyDone which positions do you think are safe? We use the CAT technique one. I've only ever had this issue with my DH. I was fine with previous partners but had no orgasms. With DH, I have orgasms using the CAT but get infections. Is it the position that's the problem?

@Spudina did you have a specific anatomical problem that meant they gave you that surgery? I apparently haven't, have had scans and cameras. I wonder if they'd refuse to do it on me?

No specific problem no. But I wonder if rhere was scar tissue or something there after so many infections that meant that the urine didn't flow as well as it should and pooled causing the infections.

Oh yes that makes sense. Maybe that's what happens with me. How did you come to have the op? Through a urologist at the hospital? I wonder if I should get GP to refer me again. It's years since I last saw a specialist. I'm just desperate to stop popping antibiotics and as I say they don't seem to work any more to prevent them and I can't keep going through them all.

Fiancee, I don't know about specific positions, just that a change of position can make a difference to some women. And lots of lubrications also.

If you are going to see your GP, make sure to take a urine sample and ask for a good mid-stream sample of urine to be sent to the lab for culture and sensitive (that will be able to tell you about whether the bacteria affecting you have developed resistances or not).

Yes via hospital. Done in a morning under a GA and no more problems. The first wee afterwards is interesting (i.e. Pretty painful) and they don't let you home till you have been, but after that all was fine.

I never had a problem with uti’s then they started, co-incidentally I thought, with a new boyfriend. I had had boyfriends before and never an issue in this regard. Went on for years. I had all sorts of tests. No cause found. Lived on urinary alkalisers and antibiotics when necessary. Then changed partners and it completely disappeared, have never had another uti since.

@HoppingPavlova that's so weird. Me too. Never a problem until with DH. Leaving him might be a bit drastic tho! Do you think it was the way you were doing it with him? Was it different? I can find any research on positions causing UTI except one random USA blogger who reckons it is the CAT technique as it puts pressure on your bladder and urinary tract.

Can’t think of anything done differently than before or since . It also was not like he was ‘unusual’ in any way anatomically including size etc, all average. Was just too much of a coincidence though. Being completely serious if I knew the cause was specific to him (somehow???) I probably would have given the long goodbye at the beginning as it was years of hell with it including invasive tests.
